  2. The Curriculum Committee

  3. Purpose The purpose of the Curriculum Committee is to improve student learning outcomes. All relevant groups will be consulted and recommendations are then made and given to the Principal. In the new structure the Curriculum Committee will require representatives from each Learning Community team.

  4. Guiding Principles • To promote the perception that curriculum is everything that affects student • learning outcomes; in and out of the classroom. • To ensure that the voice of all Curriculum Committee members is to be heard. • To ensure maximum consultation with staff, students and the wider school community. • To ensure that the College’s core values are upheld in all aspects of the Curriculum Committee’s work. • To promote a culture of excellence and academic rigour.

Proposed structure • Assistant Principal – Student Learning Outcomes • 3 Learning Community Leaders • 8 elected staff representatives • 1 from each year level 7 - 10 • 2 representatives from year 11/12 • 2 elected staff members that represent the entire teaching body • (These people represent the front line of curriculum review and development) • 2 elected student representatives from the SRC

  7. The Learning Community Coordinator

  8. ROLE The Learning Community Coordinator is responsible for the development of the team within their learning community. (The team is comprised of Home group teachers and subject teachers.) The Learning Community Coordinator reports regularly to the Learning Community Leader. The Learning Community Coordinator will work collaboratively with other Learning Community Coordinators to ensure College-wide consistency.

  9. Responsibilities • Create and promote a positive and communicative learning community environment which encourages students to strive for excellence and engagement in their education. • Develop and implement, with their team, the Learning Community Action Plan which will include: • Meeting the goals and targets as set out in the Strategic Plan and the AIP. • Utilise empirical data to improve student learning outcomes. • Develop and implement literacy (including Reading to Learn) and numeracy strategies. • Innovative pedagogy and DEECD initiatives including VELS, POLT, E-Learning, ILP’s, Student Voice, MIPS, Assessment & Reporting and OH&S. • Lead the team in preparing curriculum documentation for general distribution, including the College website.

Manage and lead the team in the daily learning community operation • including: • Attendance monitoring process (as per documentation) • Contact with parents • Enrolment • Retentions • Student academic progress • Student Code of Conduct incorporating Student Welfare and Discipline, and Behaviour Management • Uniform

Reports To: • Learning Community Leader • Assistant Principals • Principal • Policy Development and Action Plan implementation responsibilities include: • Learning Community Action Plan • Student management & welfare structures • Attendance Policy • Uniform policy & procedures • Student Code of Conduct • Pastoral Care / MIPs Action Plan • Assessment & Reporting Policy • Homework Policy • Exam Policy • OH & S implementation • Membership: • Learning Community

  12. The Learning Community

Learning Communities 7 to 12 • PURPOSE: ( According to TDS research) • Develop the Learning Community structure to ensure it is relevant, effective, efficient and engaging for the College community as a whole. • Provide relevant integrated curriculum which will engage students and cater for their individual needs. • To provide a system that improves student outcomes, excellence and connectedness. • To promote a culture of excellence and academic rigour. • To foster student leaders within the school community and create a culture of pride. • To celebrate students strengths and achievements.

Team roles & structures • 1 Learning Community Leader • 2 Learning Community Coordinators per year level both sharing curriculum and student engagement, including management issues. • Homegroup teachers, (and other teachers who are members of the Learning Community – where possible)will be located in their Learning Communities where practicable. This will allow teachers to discuss students and to work on cross curriculum as well as manage special needs students e.g. behaviour and learning difficulties.

  16. Learning Community Leader • Lead, advise and support the Learning Community team as they develop and implement curriculum, student engagement strategies and daily operations. This will include: • New studies, electives and programs • New approaches to program implementation • POLT, VELs, VCAA & DEECD requirements as appropriate. • Assistance in the development of a curriculum approach to classroom management. • Student engagement strategies • Daily operations • With the Curriculum Committee evaluate the curriculum, implement agreed changes to processes and structures and produce appropriate handbooks each year.

  17. Prepare and analyse relevant data for the reporting requirement including the Annual Report and Triennial Review. • Manage the collection of data, including attendance, lateness and early leavers, and analyse this data and produce directions to ensure improved outcomes for students. • Provide regular effective communication with the College community. • Manage resources and facilities to improve student learning outcomes and ensure equitable distribution of resources across all teaching areas with their Learning Community.
