  2. The ARHV was launched in February 2007, • and is now five years old. • On the website www.anmm.gov.au/arhvthere are: • 442vessel entries • and • 80 researchand reference pages: • on builders, designers, types, classes, events and sites • It is one of only two national, museum based, • historic vessel registers worldwide.

  3. In addition to building entries on the Register, an active external collaborative program has been embraced involving boat owners and attendance at major historic vessel gatherings: • Classic and Wooden Boat Festival • Geelong Wooden Boat Festival • Australian Wooden Boat Festival • Goolwa Wooden Boat Festival • Many individual vessels have been visited as well throughout Australia.

  4. The two review committees the ARHV Steering Committee and the ARHV Council meet four times per year. The ARHV was invited to be part of the International Congress of Maritime Musuem’sInternational Historic and Traditional Ships Panel and attended the inaugural meeting in Rotterdam in 2011. The ARHV has been incorporated into the NSW Maritime Heritage Vessels Exemption, and a similar exemption in South Australia. This demonstrates its growing authority as an independent review of heritage significance for Australian vessels.

  5. The diversity- a breakdown in numbers

  6. Proposed strategy for determining criteria for nomination to a higher tier • We established target groups of vessels in order to pilot the architecture for significance assessment in order to test the tier system. • Indigenous craft • 21 foot Restricted Class • Couta boats • Pearling luggers • Coastal trading ketches • Significant naval vessels – RAN large craft • The ARHV must consider the implications that flow from a tiered system and how this justifies the ARHV’s aim of presenting a community-based approach to vessel preservation and recognition.

  7. Examples of well-known listings

  8. Examples of the less well-known craft listed

  9. Indigenous watercraft
