  1. INT402 - Business Process Automation-A Tactical Approach Thom C. BlackwellSr. Systems Consultantthom.blackwell@sybase.com / 720-560-5605

  2. Business Process Automation – a Definition • Integrating IT Systems at a Business Level – in other words: Extract more value from the systems you already have in place

  3. Is it worth the effort? • You may be driven by regulation - HIPAA, USA Patriot Act, possibly Sarbanes Oxley Act. • Current inefficient processes may expose you to competition (see the Aviall Presentation for a great example of this.) • Required to fulfill your core business function • Ability to providing a new business function • Architectural reasons “85% of those (companies) that improved their bottom line in the first half of 2002 did so by improving their internal processes, not by increasing revenue”. Craig Conway, CEO PeopleSoft

  4. Can it be Automated? • Analyze the Business Need with an Eye to Automate

  5. Can it be automated? • Identify the Technical Issues

  6. Managing the Development Process • Tools and methodology help divide the work • Spend the time upfront to understand the tools • It will be a process that may involve crossing internal and perhaps even external borders – be prepared. • Tools allow an incremental approach for a good reason - You don’t need to boil the ocean • Business Activity Monitoring is a great tool for on-going management – and to demonstrate success.

  7. Recap • Process Automation is not an easy undertaking – pick the battle carefully • Focus on the process first, then look at the technical requirements • Build vs. buy is as always the technical decision to make – be sure to understand the BPA automation tools capabilities • End goal is to extract more value from the systems you already have in place
