  1. Article1:Cardiaclife.net AED Defibrillation At Home – To Buy Or Not To Buy? If you have ever watched someone on the brink of death, brought back to life by a doctor who yells “clear” after a giving a jerk of electricity to the chest at a TV medical show, then the machine that the doctor uses is called a defibrillator. The use of defibrillators is not restricted to hospitals only; it can be done at home if you have an automated external defibrillator (AED). The home AED is available without any prescription and most AEDs include a prescription. But there are few people who would still be confused as to whether an AED is useful or not. An AED is not for everyone. An AED can only give the kiss of life if you have the specific type of heart rhythm problem that the machine can correct. And in some situations, other emergency medical procedures and equipments such as CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) may be just as likely to save your life as a shock from an AED. So if you are planning to buy an AED you should think over the pros and cons and decide with your doctor. Cardiac arrest usually happens when the heart’s electrical movement becomes disrupted and the heartbeat gets severely fast or chaotic. Because of this chaos, the heart stops beating effectively and can’t provide blood sufficiently. During Sudden Cardiac Arrest the brain and other vital organs quickly starve for oxygen and the nutrients that blood carries. The sooner the heart is bought at normal pace, the better. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving process and can help the heart to supply blood and oxygen to brain for a short time. But often, the AED defibrillation can restore a heart’s normal rhythm. If you have an experience with the particular type of abnormal heart rhythm then you can think of buying an AED. If you are experiencing ventricular fibrillation and an AED is with you, a person standing next to you can easily connect it to your chest. Your heart rhythm can be treated with an electric shock; the AED automatically sends an electrical current to your heart muscle. Moreover the Food and Drug Administration has approved AEDs for use. Because it doesn’t require any prescription, it is available over-the-counter. The only external defibrillator that is approved for home use is Philips HeartStart home Defibrillator. The AED can be used for infants for children of age 8 or children who weigh less than 55 kg. But the use of AED on children requires a separate pad cartridge for children and a prescription is necessary for getting access to the machine. Not just at home, in addition to it, AEDs can be purchased from common places for instance at malls, office buildings, fitness centers, golf courses, airports, casinos. Keeping AEDs at home can save many precious minutes. Although the critics do argue that there’s no reliable evidence that home defibrillators can actually save more lives and critics also fear that people won’t call the emergency services however keeping AED is a precautionary measure.
