  5. How I Define Literacy • Literacy is being able to produce and comprehend both oral and written language. • Some think of literacy as being English Language Arts. We need to expand our understanding to think of being literate as producing and comprehending language in all disciplines: in math, in technology, and in science as well. • Literacy is the foundation to what we know and learn about the world.

  8. How I Define Literacy I feel literacy is better learned and understood when experienced not only through interactions with print but also with multi-modal experiences such as musical concerts. Technology allows me to create sounds and visuals to the text that enhance the learning experience by creating an engaging multisensory approach to literacy. It allows children the experience of being engaged in and interacting with the text.

How I Define Literacy • Cooperative learning experiences • A language and print rich environment • Multiple opportunities to demonstrate thinking through writing and illustrating • Using vocabulary to explain our thinking and learning • A partnership between the classroom and home • A variety of technologies are used to enrich and deepen the learning experiences in the classroom

Preliminary Findings • Theme 1: Literacy was embedded throughout instruction in the literacy and disciplinary classrooms • Theme 2: Teachers created communities of practices and used technology to support these • Theme 3: Communities of practice extended beyond the walls of the classroom to include colleagues, parents, and global community through the use of technology
