  1. START WITH A SNAPSHOT OR MENTAL PICTUREMAKING AUDIENCE RELATE TO SITUATION "I remember when I was a little girl. I'd go into my mother's closet and pick out the most glamorous dress I could find. I'd put that sparkly dress over my pink and purple polka-dot pajamas and slip on a pair of her most expensive shoes. I'd walk around the house trying not to trip and pretend I was a famous supermodel walking down the runway. Children who can't even walk yet are already doing this but not with their mothers' dresses but with their very own custom made outfits. Young girls all over the world are putting on make-up and hairspray to compete in beauty pageants to see which girl's the prettiest. I don't want our next generation to depend on looks to succeed in life, so beauty pageants for children should be banned." - 2014 Winner

  2. START WITH A FAMOUS QUOTE(ALSO PERSONAL STORY) "A philosophical speaker, by name of C Joybell See, said that we are all equal in the fact that we are all different. We are all the same in the fact that we will never be the same. When my younger brother who is on the autism spectrum was applying to Punahou. He wasn't accepted because he kept to himself and didn't interact well with others. By standards such as this, kids like Albert Einstein would not have been accepted to Punahou had they been applying. My brother, who has a above average IQ functions fine in the classroom now because of helpers and special programs that his school has allowed him to have. I think that Punahou school should have a special needs program for special needs kids with an average or above average IQ because some of the greatest minds come out of children with a learning difference." - 2014 Winner

  3. START WITH A STORY(MAKING ONE NEWS EVENT PERSONAL) "It was a cold Monday morning two days before Christmas in Corsicana Texas. Stacy Willingham was out shopping and Cameron Willingham was sleeping with his three daughters in the next room. Suddenly, smoke filled the house...If the death penalty didn't exist, Cameron Willingham would still be alive today. The death penalty needs to be abolished.

  4. START WITH AN UNEXPECTED STATEMENT - ONE THAT YOU LATER EXPLAIN "That's so gay. Nowadays you're guaranteed to hear someone or something "gay." It's an epidemic. Even though we go to one of the nation's top school. We still don't seem to know the meaning of this one word. Now tell me this, why is it that in a society that is so against bullying we choose to leave out gay bullying. Gay bullying is a serious issue that's hurting kids everywhere and needs to be put to an end."

  5. MAKE THE AUDIENCE GUESS OR WONDER BY OFFERING THE DETAILS BEFORE REVEALING THE TOPIC "I'm here to warn you of a dangerous, dark force. We see hints of it now, but its presence will become overbearing as we progress into high school and college. It makes your pulse race with fear, causes you stress, sleepless nights and steals your happiness and health. It can even push you into dangerous behavior and possibly even death. What is this force? No, it's not aliens terrorists or the plague. This enemy is called "Perfection."
