  1. TIBU Parent Meeting December 1, 2010 Sr. & 13-14 Competition

  2. SWIM MEET PREPARATION • Meet entry procedures—using the website • Nutrition before, during, and after • What to wear & where to get it • What to pack in the swim bag

  3. TRAINING CYCLES • In the 13-14 & Sr. Competition groups, training cycles are introduced. In order for swimmers to succeed, they must swim consistently throughout the cycle. • Each cycle consists of a building the base, complicated mini-cycles of speed work and training overload, and then taper for the “big meet.” • With teen swimmers, particularly girls, time drops are most likely to come at the END of the cycle. During the cycle, these swimmers are “swimming tired” and will probably not see best times every meet as they did when younger. That’s OK!

  4. CALENDAR YEAR OF TRAINING • Cycle One: September-December Championship Meets are Turkey Claus & Tom Dolan • Cycle Two: Winter Break Training (essential for building the base!) – March Championship Meets are JO’s, Sr./Jr. Champs, Sectionals, Spring Champs, and Junior Nationals • Cycle Three: April – July Championship Meets are Sr./Jr./AG Champs, MCSL Divisionals, and Junior Nationals

  5. HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING Where does high school swimming fit in? • It provides a great opportunity for “serious” swimmers to showcase their skills to peers. • It’s fun and provides camaraderie and motivation. • High school practices can NOT take the place of TIBU practices: They are too crowded to function as real work-outs for swimmers at this level. • High school meets should not disrupt the swimmer’s training schedule. Competition level swimmers should NOT skip practice Saturday morning for high school meets. They can do both! • METROS is a fun meet and generates a lot of adrenaline and excitement for the kids. Although TIBU coaches will not completely taper athletes for this meet, they will “rest” swimmers briefly.

  6. AT THE SWIM MEET • Warm-up and cool-down • Checking in with the coach • Relay procedures • Role of parents

  7. Protecting Your Children • USA Swimming is instituting “Athlete Protection Program” • TIBU coaches go through background check, reference checks, and training on appropriate behavior

  8. What parents can do: • Report any comments or actions (coach-athlete or athlete-athlete) that you believe constitute sexual harassment • Teach your children about appropriate vs. inappropriate conduct • Adhere to and teach children about NO CAMERAS in locker rooms rule • Help coaches enforce NO DECK CHANGES

  9. What you can expect from TIBU staff: • Appropriate, respectful behavior at all times • Adherence to and continuing education about USA swimming guidelines • Social interaction with teens that is appropriate • Absence of coach-athlete interaction on Facebook • Coach-swimmer phone/text use limited to swimming topics
