  1. Jr Canes 2019-2020 Preseason Parent Meeting U10 Mixed A

  2. Build a deep love for the Game: We want to build hockey players for life • Skill Development: Age 8-12 is what USA hockey describes as the “golden age” where most skill development takes place. • Fun: These are 8, 9, and 10 year old kids. They are playing A level hockey, not NHL, NCAA D1, or Major Junior. Results really don’t matter in the long run. We want to create lifelong memories • The Three D’s: We want to teach Discipline, Desire, and Dedication through every Jr Canes on ice and off ice activity • Shaping Youth: We want to mold the future doctors, lawyers, teachers, CEO’s of the world by teaching them how to be good hockey players focused on the Three D’s, good teammates, good sportsmen (women), good friends, and good human beings Goals

  3. Practice Attendance: If you are healthy and can get to a practice you are expected to attend. If you cannot attend, you must notify the head coach and/or team manager. If you are in concussion protocol you may not attend practices even to “just watch”. Carpooling is encouraged • Game Attendance: Arrival time dictated by head coach. No less than 1 hour before game. Typical schedule will be: 60-50 mins prior to game: chalk board concepts review 50-35 mins prior: team warm up 35-15 mins prior: players dress 15- 10 mins prior: All players in locker room with skates tied. No more parent interaction from here on out 10-0 mins prior: Coaches review game plan specifics Post game: Players/coaches/manager only in locker room for 10 mins to recap game • Off Ice Training: Expected to participate weekly. If you have to miss you can make it up on your own at home. • Attire: Players are expected to wear their Jr Canes warm up suits to all games. In the fall when the weather is very warm Jr Canes shorts and tee shirt work out attire is acceptable. Starting October 1st all players must have a hat or touque to wear to and from the rink. It must be worn for all dryland training in cold weather. Expectations

  4. A Word on Inclusion: 30 years ago when I played hockey there was little to no diversity in the game. Today more than 30% of the NHL is represented by minorities. The NHL has a “Hockey is for Everyone” campaign and we should embrace this philosophy. • 8,9, and 10 year olds don’t understand differences in skin color, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, etc. We will not tolerate any type of discrimination or negativity towards our diverse players. If you hear or see anyone from other programs say or do anything offensive please notify the head coach or the rink manager immediately. • Our team is one big family, and we will treat everyone as such. Focus Item

  5. Tuesdays – Garner 7-8pm U10 A & U10 S Girls: Team Based Practice Video/Chalk Concepts 1 Tuesday per month 6-6:30pm • Wednesdays – Garner 5:45-6:45pm U10 A & U12 S Girls: Team Based Practice • Thursdays = RCI 5:30-6:30pm U10 A & U10 Girls: Player Development Dryland: 6:45-7:15pm Practice Logistics

  6. Practices are Shared Ice: Some nights we will operate station based practices only. Some nights we will operate a mix of station based practices along with team breakouts. Some nights we’ll mix the group together and operate as one unit with full ice drills. • Practice Curriculum: Practice plans and full season curriculum will be developed by Tim Healy and Tim Polley. Our goal is to introduce these kids to advanced hockey concepts, improve skills, and set them up for success in U12, U14, and beyond. • Dry Land: We’ll operate a rotation of dryland training structure. Some nights we’ll focus on shooting stations. Some nights we’ll focus on stickhandling skills with green biscuits, and some nights we’ll work on agility, balance, and strength by completing traditional dryland activities Practice Plans

  7. Players will be granted equal ice time throughout the season. An exception to this is that coaches reserve the right to “shorten the bench” in the final 5 minutes of a game in which there is a lead of 2 goals or less. • Players are expected to play hard while on the ice. If a player repeatedly gives a subpar effort they may be benched to reinforce the concept of the 3 D’s. Coaches will push players to work hard in every drill at every practice this season. Practicing at 50-75% speed does not help make you better, you have to give 100% effort to improve. • Players will never be disciplined for making physical mistakes on the ice. • Players are expected to be in the game mentally while on the bench, and on the ice, and be ready to play. Fooling around on the bench and not being ready to take the ice for a shift can result in being skipped for a shift. • Players are expected to respect their teammates, opponents, coaches, referees, rink workers, parents, and teammate’s parents. Foul language, abusive language, physical aggressiveness will not be tolerated and will lead to disciplinary action. Repeated issues will result in a meeting between the player, their parents, and their coaches. Continued issues will result in a Jr Canes disciplinary board meeting. Discipline & Playing Time

  8. Players, coaches, and manager are the only people allowed in the locker room on game days. If a player needs help tying their skates they should exit the locker room and have a parent help in the rink lobby or hallway. • There should always be at least 2 adults in the locker room with the kids at any given time. No adult should be alone in a locker room with players at any time. • No partial or full nudity is allowed. Players must take their hockey undergarments and change in the bathroom, not in the locker room. • For practices girls will dress in the girls locker room and boys will dress in the boys locker room. We will all be in the same locker room for games. See #3 for gamed day rules. • Cell Phones are not allowed in the locker room for both players and coaches. No other devices with recording or picture taking capability will be allowed as well. If a player or coach has a cell phone they must exit the locker room before using it. *Exception to this is that we may at times use a camcorder to record pre-game and post-game locker room talks. Players will be fully dressed including jerseys and will be made aware of the recording Locker Room Policies

  9. We have the privilege of representing an NHL hockey team when we travel. Therefore we are held to a higher standard of conduct than other programs • Away games and tournaments are not vacations, they are opportunities for us to play hockey at a high level. • No swimming in hotel pools unless authorized by coaches • 9pm curfew for all players (coaches may adjust based upon certain game schedules). Sleep greatly affects performance! • Eat healthy as much as possible! No player should eat anything less than 2 hours prior to a game, and most will want to abstain for at least 4 hours prior to puck drop to allow for peak metabolism. • Players should not be running wild through the hotels without adults. It’s okay for them to go off on their own BUT they MUST behave well in doing so. • Plan for traffic. If you think it takes 2 hours to drive to a rink and you need to be there an hour before game time for pre-game, then leave 4 hours before puck drop to ensure you have ample time. Away Game Policies
