Governor’s Office of Workforce Development Two Martin Luther King Jr. Drive 1104 West Tower Atlanta, Georgia 30334 What Challenges Do We Face? • America’s highly skilled industrial workers are aging, and there are not enough young people entering the industry to replace our retiring workforce. • Unless something is done, Georgia and the nation will face severe problems in building the future. • Needs in manufacturing, telecommunications, transportation, energy and industrial construction. Governor’s Office of Workforce Development Two Martin Luther King Jr. Drive 1104 West Tower Atlanta, Georgia 30334 America’s Industrial Construction Challenges Available Workforce Negative Perception • 185,000 new skilled tradesmen are needed every year. • 49% of the skilled trade workforce is a Baby Boomer – people aged 47-65. • 1 in 4: for every four (4) trades people who retire, the industry is producing one replacement. • The average skilled construction salary pays 27% more than the Georgia citizen’s average salary. • 66.8% of 18-26 year olds have very little to no interest in a career in the skilled trades. • 77.8% of parents think their child entering into the skilled craft labor trades will have a negative impact on their child’s safety and health • 44% of parents think it will have a negative impact on their child’s financial goals. Governor’s Office of Workforce Development Two Martin Luther King Jr. Drive 1104 West Tower Atlanta, Georgia 30334 Objective of Go Build™ Georgia • Through the Governor’s Office of Workforce Development, Go Build Georgia will build a broad coalition of key stakeholders to address the availability of craft labor professionals in Georgia over the next generation. • To design and develop a comprehensive recruitment initiative that would have statewide focus to attract new workers into the craft labor careers. • Link unemployed Georgians, students and parents with business stakeholders, secondary counselors, educators and post-secondary education options. • Strong partnership with the Technical College System of Georgia Governor Nathan Deal Executive Director Tricia Pridemore

Governor’s Office of Workforce Development Two Martin Luther King Jr. Drive 1104 West Tower Atlanta, Georgia 30334 Already Positive Changes within Professional Licensing Boards Division • Secretary of State Brian Kemp announced a plan to streamline the operations at his agency’s Professional Licensing Boards Division (PLB) through more efficient procedures in license application review and code enforcement. • The changes will help the state’s next generation of skilled trade professionals obtain licensure sooner so they can start a job or start a business faster which is very important to the success of Go Build Georgia.
