PACE @ Lockwood • PACE = Parents Active in Cooperative Education • Partnership of Teachers, Parents, and Children committed to an enriched learning environment • With our school and neighborhoods, PACE strives as a community to foster learning and to develop a foundation for our children’s future.

  5. Who we are • ~ 121 families • ~ 151 students divided into 6 classrooms1st – 6th Grade • 6 wonderful teachers, 1 Spanish instructor • Supported by the excellent Lockwood principal and staff

PACE May Be growing! • Investigating the possibility of • PACE Kindergarten • Kindergarten investigative committee has been formed • If you are interested in PACE Kindergarten please fill out the Kindergarten interest form so we can communicate to the District your strong support for offering this class

  7. History Fifteen families presented a proposal to the Northshore School District (NSD) for a program that would emphasize higher parent involvement • Created in 1973 with Kindergarten to Grade 3 in one classroom at Lockwood Elementary. • Expanded between 1974 and 1999 to become a Kindergarten to Grade 6 program at four sites throughout the district. • Reduced in 2001 to a Grade 1 to 6 program at the same four sites. • In 2009, consolidated from 4 sites to 3 (Lockwood, Woodmoor, Wellington).

  8. PACE Is Not… • A remedial program • A gifted program • An accelerated program • In other words, our classes have the same demographic range of students in any classroom.

  9. How PACE Is the Same… • PACE does not differ from the regular Lockwood neighborhood program in: • Curriculum • PE • Library • Health • Musical Instruction • Additional School Activities

What PACE Adds… • Parents are consistently involved in the classroom during instruction which allows for more: • One-on-one instruction • Small group instruction • Cooperative, multi-age instruction • Enrichment activities • Parents help with non-instructional tasks, enabling the teachers to focus on instruction and curriculum development. • Students move through grades together

More of what PACE adds… • Student Enrichment Opportunities • Mini-Units Multi-grade theme-based instructional activities • Foreign Language Education Weekly in-class Spanish instruction • Outdoor Education Bi-annual, all day Field Trip, involving multi-age classes in an outdoor setting • Field Trips A variety of field trips for every grade level

  12. What else PACE adds… • Social and Community Activities • Whole community events • Family Camp - Bi-annual, weekend camp experience for PACE families • Spring Picnic • Community ServiceFood Lifeline, Park clean-up days • Individual Classroom events • Participation in PTA-sponsored events

  13. Teachers • Lockwood’s PACE teachers: • are an integral part of the PACE partnership, • establish the curriculum, • are dedicated to the program philosophy, • incorporate parent participation into the learning environment, • provide a dynamic and diverse education.

  14. School and Community • PACE has been an integral part of Lockwood Elementary and its surrounding community for over three decades. • PACE parents are active members of PTA and other school and district programs.

PACE Parents… • Learn and grow along with their children, in an exciting and enriching atmosphere. • Respect and assist the teachers, students, and greater school community. • Collaborate with other parent helpers and expand social networks. • Gain experience using or acquiring new skills, and understand your child’s school world more directly. • Enjoy the experience!

PACE Parents… • CommitFINANCIALLY • Program fee per student determined annually:(2010-2011 school year = $200). • Covers Spanish Instruction, Mini-Units, Outdoor Education, Social Events, and all planned class field trips. • If a class elects to do additional field trips, additional $$ may be required. • Write a check, participate in fund-raising opportunities, or a combination of both.

  18. PACE Parents… • Commit TIME • 80 hours per family per school year • Many choices—classroom, committee or board position, field trips, prep at home • Attend bi-monthly General meetings

  19. Classroom Help Parents help when and how the teachers need them. Many ways to help: Assist with instruction Correct and log homework Assist in enrichment activities Many other creative interactions Prepare class materials Drive on field trips Organize and tidy up Parent Involvement Opportunities

  22. Choosing PACE… • Consider whether your child matches the learning environment provided by the program. • Consider whether your family matches the philosophy of the program and its commitments. • Consider whether the transportation and scheduling will work for your family.

Who Can Enroll in PACE • PACE is open to all children in the Northshore School District on a space-available basis. • PACE @ Lockwood feeder schools are: Arrowhead Crystal Springs Frank Love Kenmore Lockwood Shelton View Westhill • If you are in Northshore, but your elementary school is not listed here, you can enroll in one of the other 2 PACE programs.

  24. How To Enroll in PACE • Sign up for a tour. • Attend a tour. • Complete and turn in paperwork. • Your child’s name is placed in a lottery. • Families are notified of the status of their enrollment application in late February. • If classes are filled, families will go on a waitlist.
