The Most Visited Museum in the World • Flagship building on National Mall opened in 1976 • From day-one, visitor attendance exceeded all reasonable expectations • New State-of-the-Art Companion Facility • OVER 1.2 MILLION VISITORS SO FAR OPENED DECEMBER 15, 2003 AVERAGES MORE THAN NINE MILLION VISITORS ANNUALLY

  4. Why The Need For Expansion? • 10 percentwas on loan • 10 percent of the collection was on display • Approximately 80% of artifacts were stored in the Paul Garber Restoration Facility in Suitland, MD THE MUSEUM DID NOT MOVE, IT HAS EXPANDED

A Museum Experience Unlike Any Other • Unparalleled size and architecture • A series of hangar-like structures -- about 760,000 square feet total • Aviation hangar -- three football fields long; 250’ wide . . . uninterrupted by interior walls • Steel trusses arch 10 stories high BUILDING A WORLD CLASS LEGACY

A Museum Experience Unlike Any Other • Three levels of aircraft on display • Aircraft suspended as if in flight • Skywalks provide close-up views at many different levels and distances • Airplanes, Spacecraft, and Artifacts on display • Currently the Hazy Center has: • Over 80 aircraft • 65 spacecraft • Exceeds current display total at the National Mall building A MUST-SEE DESTINATION • By circa 2007, approximately: • 200 aircraft and • 135 large space artifacts

What’s Next? • Preservation of our growing collection so we can continue to display the largest collection of aviation and space artifacts in the world • A work in progress: Launching of the McDonnell Space Hangar, fall 2004 • More to come: More aircraft and spacecraft arriving every year through 2007 • Phase II: Restoration Hangar, Archives, Collections Processing, Conservation Lab, Study Collection Unit • Sponsorship: Naming opportunities available for spaces and artifacts PHASE II

Cost & Funding • Total cost of the project: $311 million • Aviation Hangar cost is $253 million • Restoration Hangar $41 million • Total of $311 million • Raised $251 million from private sources $0 • Federal funds for construction: $251 million raised from private sources by museum staff – A FIRST
