  4. Definition of Sexual Assault Any unwanted sexual penetration • Oral • Anal • Vaginal • With an object That is forced or coerced upon a person against their will or without theirconsent.

Statistics 1 in 4 women are sexually assaulted in their lifetime 1 in 6 boys are sexually assaulted before the age of 18 Adolescents ages 11-17 have the highest percentage of rape 8 out of 10 teenagers who are raped are assaulted by someone they know 72% of sexual assaults are not reported to the police

  6. 1st Degree – Max. penalty is life imprisonment Each degree depends on whether or not sexual touching or penetration occurred. Each degree also depends on different circumstances such as the age of the victim, if a weapon was used, etc. Criminal Sexual Conduct 2nd Degree – Max. penalty is 15 years imprisonment 3rd Degree – Max. penalty is 15 years imprisonment 4th Degree – Max. penalty is 2 years and/or $500 fine State Sex Offender Registry www.mipsor.state.mi.us/

  8. Consent What is consent? “YES!” Consent is saying… It is giving permission for ALL of the sexual contact that happens

  9. Consent Consent ALWAYS needs to be… Freely given! Voluntary! Of one’s own free will! Absent of coercion!

  10. What You Need to Know About Consent Body language & clothing are NOT consent. A person under the heavy influence of alcohol or other drugs is NOT legally able to give consent. The legal age of consent is years old. Check out mixed messages. If the person you are with says, “I’m not sure.” and check it out!

  11. Coercion What is coercion? Using threats persuasion manipulation blackmail blame guilt trips put downs pressure to get a person to do something they don’t want to do, are uncomfortable doing, or wouldn’t normally do.

What Does Coercion Sound Like? “If you really loved me you would.” “What do you expect me to do, you’re the one who got me all excited?” “I’ll tell everyone we did it anyway.” “It’s no big deal – stop acting like such a little girl.” “I won’t take you home if you don’t.” “Have another drink.”

  14. What To Do If You Are Sexually Assaulted • Get SAFE! Get to a safe place away from potential danger. • Tell a person you trust what has happened. You don’t have to go through this alone. If you choose to have a forensic evidence collection exam it is encouraged that you DO NOT: Rinse, drink, wash, or shower Change clothes or the environment where the assault occurred.

  16. Helping A Friend DO: • LISTEN • Tell your friend it is not their fault. • Support her/his choices. • Let them be in control of who knows about the assault. • Offer options and resources. • Offer your support to assist him/her in getting help.
