  1. Science Starter Why is it warmer in the summer?? Many textbooks say that Earth’s tilt causes the seasons. But how does the tilt cause the seasons to change? Use the cards at your groups to organize the statements into 1 of 3 categories: 1. Explains why it is warmer in the Summer 2. Does no explain why it is warmer in the Summer 3. Group is unsure/cannot agree

  2. Agenda • Astronomy Probe • Classroom Updates • Frayer Model Vocabulary • Seasons & the Moon • Earth & Moon Stations • Exit Ticket

  3. Classroom Updates • What did Mr. Houtz do with Friday’s Exit Ticket? • Why are names outside the door? • What is on the bulletin board? • What about group points?

  4. Frayer Model Vocabulary A change in the direction of the rotational axis of a rotating body Precession A precession of a gyroscope, Earth’s precession Rotating objects that have no tilt, non-rotating objects

  5. Frayer Model Vocabulary Nutation

  6. Frayer Model-6 minutes • Complete 2 more Frayer models for the word rotation and revolution • Remember to include: • Definition • Visual/picture • Examples • Non-Examples

  7. Lesson Essential Question What causes the seasons?

  8. Day and night! Rotation is like spinning and causes DAY and NIGHT

  9. Seasons! Revolution is an orbit and causes SEASONS

  10. Northern Hemisphere Summer Solstice • The apparent path of the sun is the ___________. • The sun reaches it’s __________ altitude for the year. • _________ period of daylight. longest highest Longest

  11. Northern Hemisphere Winter Solstice • The apparent path of the sun is the ___________. • The sun reaches it’s __________ altitude for the year. • _________ period of daylight. shortest lowest Shortest

  12. PHASES OF THE MOON WHAT DOES THE MOON DO FOR US? THE MOON’S GRAVITY CREATES TIDES HERE ON EARTH *1

  13. PHASES OF THE MOON WHAT DOES THE MOON DO FOR US? *9

  14. PHASES OF THE MOON WHY DOES IT CHANGE PHASES? CLICK HERE FOR WEBSITE http://www.harcourtschool.com/activity/moon_phases/moon_phases.swf

  15. Time to practice! • We will be doing stations a little different this time. • Today we only have 3 stations and you will be rotating around the different areas of the room • You will each receive a sheet of blank paper and you are to fold it into 3 equal parts. • Number each part Station 1, Station 2, and Station 3 and draw a line to separate each section

  16. Time to practice! • Each station will have a learning activity and then something for you to complete (draw, write, model) • At each station you must complete the objective and make sure you have all of the information needed! (You can take notes if you wish) • You will have only 10 minutes at each station, work quickly! • Odd tables go to the front stations, even tables go to the back stations

  17. Return to your seats, put everything away except for notebook, stations sheet and pen/pencil!(First 2 groups ready=2 points)

  18. Lesson Essential Question What causes the seasons?

  19. What causes the Seasons? • The direction of Earth’s axis always stays the same as we circle the Sun • When the Northern Hemisphere tilts toward the Sun the days are longer, so there is more time for the Earth to warm up • When the Northern Hemisphere tilts towards the Sun then the Sun appears higher in the sky viewed from the United States, so sunlight is more concentrated and intense.

  20. Exit Ticket 3- Things you learned today 2- Things you would like to know more __about in this unit 1- Question you still have about seasons, __tides, or phases of the moon
