  2. Planting Corn Corn is sensitive to cold weather, which is why it should be planted in the middle of May. • First dig a trench at about 5-6 inches deep. • Sprinkle fertilizer at the bottom of the trench and then mix the fertilizer into the soil. • Plant the corn seeds about six inches apart in the trench. • When the corn begins to grow, fill back in some of the dirt into the trench and around the corn. (This will help the corn have a better and deeper root system.) • You harvest corn in 3-4 months after you plant it.

  3. Caring For Corn Remember when caring for corn to: • Keep soil slightly dry. • Water it up to 3 times a week. • To water near the canes. • No fluoride in the water. • Keep Ph in between 6.0 and 6.5. • Watch for pests. • Add nitrogen monthly. • Provide the plant support.

  4. Random Facts! • Scientific name is Zea Mays Var. Rugosa. • It takes 70-80 days to mature. • The main pests of corn are earworms and corn borer. • Planting in cool soil may set back the seedlings. • Best time to plant is when the soil temperature is between 21-24°C or 70-75°F. • Requires fertile, well-drained soil with the pH being about 6.0-6.5. • Corn is ready when the ears are completely filled and a kernel shows through the “milky white liquid”. • Corn is pollinated by the wind. • Corn day is January 28th.

Drying using the sun takes about 2-3 days but, mechanical drying takes about 6-8 hours. • Next dry the shelled corn for moisture content.
