Respiratory Therapy • Work in broad spectrum of diagnostic, critical care, and restorative settings • Bureau of Labor Statistics expects 20% growth over ten years • 122,000 practitioners in 2006 • 145,000 expected by 2016 • Part of the growth is associated with the expanding role of the respiratory therapist

  3. Need for MRC • 352 accredited undergraduate programs in respiratory care in US • 50 are at the baccalaureate level • YSU has one of four BSRC programs in Ohio • 4 graduate level programs • 2 entry-level • 2 advanced degrees for RTs • No graduate programs in Ohio or any neighboring states (Coalition for Baccalaureate and Graduate Respiratory Therapy Education)

Need for MRC • Unanimously supported by the three major professional organizations • American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) • Supported under the 2015 Profession Initiative • BSRC will become entry-level for profession • Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) • National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)

Need for MRC • 100 BSRC graduates since 1998 • 52 majors enrolled • 125 AAS in RC graduates who have obtained a BSAS in Allied Health • Needs assessment • 45 respondents • Mean of 4.15 (5 strong interest) • Online preferred delivery method (3.95 average) • Unanimous support from RC Advisory Committee

  6. Proposed MRC • Housed in Department of Health Professions • 10 programs (8 hold national accreditations) • 1 graduate level program (HHS) • 13 full-time faculty • Facilities already exist • Propose traditional delivery method that will transition to an online (asynchronous) program

Admission Criteria • Hold National Board for Respiratory Care professional CRT or RRT credential • Current RT state licensure • Membership in AARC • Unrecalculated GPA of 3.0 or higher • Satisfactory GRE score • Three professional letters of recommendation • Letter of intent stating professional goals • Personal interview (optional)

  14. Anticipated Enrollment • Initial • 10 to 15 students • Traditional format • Constant inquiries • Year three • 25 to 30 students • Transition to asynchronous format will dramatically increase growth
