  1. 12.2 Series and Summation 9.2.2.5 Recognize and solve problems that can be modeled using finite geometric sequences and series, such as home mortgage and other compound interest examples. Know how to use spreadsheets and calculators to explore geometric sequences and series in various contexts.

  2. Lesson Objective: I will be able to find the sum of a given series and write in summation notation. Summation Notation – Add each term in the series. The top number is the last value The bottom is the 1st value The outside is the explicit function for the kth term. Guiding Question: How do I represent and evaluate a series?

  3. So to evaluate a series, you simply find each term and add them all together. • What would these sums be? Guiding Question: How do I represent and evaluate a series?

  4. What if you had a series and you had to write the series rule? Don’t forget to use summation notation. *if 1st term is pos. use *if 1st term is neg. use • 4 + 8 + 12 + 16 + 20 • -2 + 4 – 6 + 8 – 10 + 12 Guiding Question: How do I represent and evaluate a series?

  5. Some of the more popular series have easier formulas you can use to evaluate. Constant Linear Quadratic Guiding Question: How do I represent and evaluate a series?

  6. Evaluate these 1. 2. 3. Guiding Question: How do I represent and evaluate a series?

  7. Assignment Pg. 874 13-23 • Day 2 Pg. 874 24-33, 42, 49 Guiding Question: How do I represent and evaluate a series?
