  2. Basic Details • Born October 21, 1772 in Ottery St. Mary, England • Died July 25, 1834 in Highgate, England • Educated at Jesus College, Cambridge • Never graduated • Poet and literary critic • Best known for The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Kubla Khan

Personal Life • Married Sarah Fricker in 1795 • Marriage was very unhappy • They separated in 1808. • Three children: Sarah, Harley, and Derwent • Used laudanum throughout his life to treat effects of a childhood illness • Opium addict (definitely by 1808) • Friends with William Wordsworth • In 1798, they published Lyrical Ballads.

More Personal Life • Severely depressed throughout his life • Probably bipolar • Connected to his drug use • After 1810, he distanced himself from his family and “usual” friends • Most of his later work was influenced by drug overdoses. • Died of heart disease probably caused or worsened by his opium use

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner • A narrative poem • Tells the story of a sailor returned from a long journey • Possibly inspired by James Cook or the Wandering Jew • Possibly inspired by A Voyage Round the World by Way of the Great South Sea • Inspired/created during a walking tour with the Wordsworth siblings • Archaic language in first edition but not in second
