  2. What is a symbol • According to Wikipedia, a symbol is: • an object, • a picture, • A written word, • A sound, • or particular mark • These represent something else by association, resemblance, or convention.

  3. What is a symbol? • A symbol stands for some greater idea. • What do the following symbols stand for?

  4. Symbols in Literature • Where can we recognize symbols in a piece of literature? • Check the title! • A frequently repeated item or idea. • An item that is described in detail • An item that seems odd or out of place

  5. Task • In your group, identify the symbol • Discuss what you think the symbol means • Ask for help if you’re not sure

Symbol 1: Jane • She represents his loss of connection with the world • The way he avoids her shows his inability to communicate – alienation – and not wanting to accept that he has a problem and is hurt and should speak about it • The fact that she always keeps coming up into his mind represents his need to communicate, yet he is continuously afraid of reaching out

Ducks in winter: • Represent how he feels in society, and he feels lost and homeless. • Ducks migrate in winter - Not moving on, and not accepting reality. • Holden should be moving on like the ducks do. • Neither can go back to Central Park. • Holden is trying to find out where the ducks go, to know where he belongs.

  8. Symbol 3: The Red Hat • Security • Comfort • Uniqueness and individuality • A way to show his difference separation from society • Alli  Different, special

  9. Symbol 4: Museum • The museum appeals to him because the exhibitions are frozen and unchanging. He also mentions that he is troubled by the fact that he has changed every time he returns to them. • The museum represents the world Holden wishes he could live in: a world where nothing ever changes, where everything is simple, understandable, and infinite. • Holden is scared of unpredictable challenges the world might present, he does not fully comprehend the nature of the world which surrounds him.
