  11. QUSTION • What are the geographical features of the Salinas valley in California? • What kinds of jobs are available here? • What was John Steinbeck's relationship to the Salinas Valley?

  12. What are the geographical features of the Salinas valley in California? • The Gabilan and Santa Lucia mountain ranges border the Salinas Valley to the east and west, respectively. Both mountain ranges and the Salinas Valley run approximately 90 miles (145 km) south-east from Salinas towards King City. The valley lends its name to the geologic province in which it is located, the Salinian Block.

  13. What kinds of jobs are available here? • Like most of the country, the Salinas Valley would have been about 90% agricultural in that era. Flowers and grapes have long been major crops in the area but green vegetables have always been a major source of income. The proximity of Monterrey would have left the possibility of some fishing and canning jobs. Every place has some light manufacturing and retail but it mostly supported the agriculture. For depression times, Salinas was considered relatively prosperous.

  14. What was John Steinbeck'relationship to the Salinas Valley? • John Steinbeck is an important person in the history of the Salinas Valley. Salinas is where his life began and where he spent the first years of it. For Steinbeck, Salinas and the surrounding areas served as inspiration and setting for many of his novels. He was born in Salinas, California on February 27, 1902. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Salinas and attended Salinas High School, graduating in 1918. He is also buried in the Garden of Memories Cemetary in Salinas

  15. John Steinbeck attended St. Paul's Episcopal Church as a boy. It was originally located several blocks from his house which is now downtown Salinas. He served as an acolyte, or altar boy, and choir member. There is a story about Steinbeck dropping a cross onto a visiting bishop's head and losing his head acolyte privilages. Steinbeck's Church
