  2. Objectives • Assist Pike County Health Department with entering school screening data • Evaluate trends • Sex • School • Year • Report findings and compare to national and state data • Provide tools to facilitate data entry

Definitions Body Mass Index (BMI): Weight (kg) / Height (m2) or Weight (lbs) / Height (inches2)x 703 Overweight: Children with BMI values at or above the 85th percentile of the sex-specific BMI growth charts Obese: Children with BMI values at or above the 95th percentile of the sex-specific BMI growth charts

  4. Healthy People 2010 • Reduce the proportion of children and adolescents who are overweight or obese • Overweight & obesity: leading health indicator • Reduction in the proportion of children overweight/obese to 5% is a target goal • U.S. has made little progress

  7. Methods • Obtained hardcopy data on 6th grade children attending public school in Pike County, Kentucky • Data available for 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school years • 12 schools included in analysis • Microsoft Excel used for analysis

  8. Variables Examined • Sex • Age at screening • BMI • BMI percentile

  15. Limitations • Incomplete records • Inconsistent measurement precision • Relied on estimations of percentile for one school

  16. Conclusions • Kentucky has higher rates of overweight & obesity than the U.S. • Pike County has higher rates of overweight & obesity than KY & U.S. • Prevalence in Pike County is similar in boys and girls • Most 6th graders with weight issues are obese

  17. Recommendations • Explore feasibility of electronic data transfer • Consider use of free CDC program for ease of data entry • Standardization of data collection • Quality Control • Use data to highlight magnitude of problem and special needs of community
