  2. Why was Earth Day started? • 1960s • Environment was in visible ruins • Pollution • People were mad • Politicians weren’t concerned with “being green”

  3. How was Earth Day started? • Rally • Gaylord Nelson – Senator from Wisconsin • April 22, 1970 • Protest like anti-Vietnam War demonstrations • Expressed concern about what was happening to land, rivers, lakes, air • Launched the modern environmental movement

  4. How has Earth Day changed how we think? • 1970-U.S. Protection Agency was started • 1990 – 200 million people in 140 nations • Concerns today = climate

  5. What do people do on Earth Day? • Buy green products • Recycle • Plant a tree • Pick up trash

  6. Fun Facts • If every newspaper was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees each year. Unfortunately only 27% of all American newspapers are recycled. • More than 20,000,000 Hershey's Kisses are wrapped each day, using 133 square miles of tinfoil. All that foil is recyclable, but not many people realize it • 14 billion pounds of trash is dumped into the ocean every year

  7. What are we doing? • Cut and tear out pictures from magazines. Glue to paper = Collage • Cover with varnish • Color with oil pastels • Cover with varnish • Outline & enhance with ink
