  1. ECE 477 Final Presentation Team 15  Spring 2013 Andrew Batek, Jackson McCormick, Carey Woolet, Justin Lindley

  2. Outline • Project overview • Block diagram • Design challenges • Individual contributions • Project demonstration • Questions / discussion

  3. Project Overview - Abstract Interweaving the impressive visual power of electricity and the visceral emotion of music, Acoustic Storm takes analog or digital audio input and outputs its own rendition using two varieties of solid state tesla coils.

  4. Project Overview - Motivation • Previous experience with spark gap Tesla Coil Construction • Shared interest in audio / audio processing • Tesla coils are pretty cool…

  5. Overview – Selected Project Details • Input Options • Midi • Analog • Multiple Coil types • Class E HFSSTC (Tweeters) • DRSSTC (Mids) • Control Options • Temperature and spectrogram output • Potential for volume and tone control • Safety Considerations

  6. Block Diagram

  7. Design Challenges • High Power Application • Multiple safety considerations • Many “off-PCB”circuits • Extremely Difficult Power Supply • MOTs (They worked!) • Current Controlled Boost Converter (it didn’t…) • Physical Construction Requirements • LCD • Air Cored Resonant Transformers are not an easy concept…

  8. Individual Contributions • Team Leader – Jackson McCormick • Team Member 2 – Andrew Batek • Team Member 3 – Justin Lindley • Team Member 4 – Carey Woolet

  9. Team Member 1 – Jackson McCormick • Critical Path Identification • Circuit Design • Coil Design • Construction • …

  10. Member 2 – Andrew Batek • Safety Plan and Setup • Construction • Schematics & Design • FIR Filtering • …

  11. Member 3 – Justin Lindley • HFSSTC PCB Design • Temperature Sensing • Software Considerations • Misc. PCB Construction • …

  12. Member 4 – Carey Woolet • PCB • MIDI and Analog Output • Filter Implementation • …

  13. Project Demonstration (Video) • An ability to decode MIDI input and output a PWM signal at the corresponding frequencies • An ability to receive analog input, digitize it using an ADC, and output a PWM signal corresponding to the analog waveform • An ability to monitor and control system status (i.e. volume control and temperature monitoring) through an LCD and input system • An ability to generate and control a power output sufficient to drive an electrical arc based acoustic device • An ability to split audio signals at certain crossover frequencies and send them to a specific speaker (i.e. tweeters, mid, bass signals)

  14. Questions / Discussion
