  1. Shoe Exercise Please list all procedures (steps) for tying your shoes.

  2. How to Write a Lab Report Information to be included in each section

  3. What is a Lab Report • A lab report serves many purposes. • Determines how well you performed your experiment. • Checks for understanding of what happened during the experiment. • Shows how well you can share and organize the information.

  4. Parts of a Lab Report • 6 Main Parts or Headings • Question • Introduction/Hypothesis • Safety/Materials • Procedure • Data/Analysis • Conclusion

  5. Question • States why you are doing the experiment. • What is the need/problem you are trying to solve. • Generally is found directly on the lab sheet/instructions that are given to you.

  6. Introduction/Hypothesis • Some background information about the experiment. • (Who is it being done for, why it is being done) • Your hypothesis in the IF…….THEN format. (Be specific! Must be measurable/testable)

  7. Plants do better when given Miracle Grow. • Bad Hypothesis • Plants will grow taller when given Miracle Grow. • Good Hypothesis • Hermit crabs like colorful shells. • Bad Hypothesis • Hermit crabs choose colorful shells over drab shells. • Good Hypothesis • Hypotheses must be Testable! • You can’t test happiness or fear, love, likes or dislikes; only things you can measure by experiment.

  8. Safety/ Materials • List ANY AND ALL materials used during lab • Always include GAS which stands for goggles, aprons, shoes • Safety must include general lab safety rules and special rules for any chemicals or substances

  9. Procedure • A bulleted list of the steps you have taken in order to complete the experiment. • Should be direct and to the point, do not make it wordy. • Another person should be able to complete the experiment when reading your procedures.

  10. Data/Analysis • Should include data tables and figures used to collect data • Reflect and analyze the data based on they outcomes of the experiment • Possible answer to hypothesis • Room for human error? • For this purpose, questions will be given to you

  11. Conclusion • State whether or not your hypothesis was supported • The answer to the question posed and an explanation. • Things you would change next time you do the experiment

  12. Miscellaneous • You should always include a title for the experiment. • It can be made up or copied from the lab. • Must tell me what the lab is about. • Grammar! • USE SPELL CHECK AND PROOFREAD YOUR LAB BEFORE TURNING IT IN!

  13. “What-not-to-do” Lab Take your time and please indentify what is wrong with each number spot. You may use your notes and any other materials.

  14. What makes a glow stick glow? • “Specifically, the chemical reaction works like this: The hydrogen peroxide oxidizes the phenyl oxalate ester, to form phenol and an unstable peroxyacid ester. The unstable peroxyacid ester decomposes, resulting in phenol and a cyclic peroxy compound. The cyclic peroxy compound decomposes to carbon dioxide. This decomposition reaction releases the energy that excites the dye.”
