  2. 2006 THEME The theme for World Mental Health Day 2006 is “Building Awareness-Reducing Risk: Mental Illness and Suicide,” calling attention to the growing worldwide public health impact of suicide and the increased risks of suicide among people with mental illnesses

  3. KEY ISSUES • The World Health Organization estimates that there are 1 million deaths by suicide each year, representing 1.4% of the global burden of disease. • Mental illness is the greatest single risk factor for suicide

  4. KEY ISSUE • Good mental health care can reduce the risk of suicide among people with a mental illness

  5. KEY ISSUE • Culture, religion, and media play important roles in how the relationship between mental illness and suicide is addressed in different countries

  6. MAJOR TOPIC AREAS • Mental Illness as a major risk factor for suicide • Addressing mental illness and suicide across the life span • Culture and religion: cross-cultural perspectives • The Media matters!

  7. 2006 CAMPAIGN ELEMENTS • International Forum on Mental Illness and Suicide focusing on the campaign theme and sub-topics • World Mental Health Day Campaign materials and planning packet (distributed to over 4000 organizations in 150 countries) • Collaborative efforts with the International Association for Suicide Prevention around WMHDay and World Suicide Prevention Day • 2006 WMHDay South America Launch – Buenos Aires, October 4 • Global WMHDay Launch event with PAHO on October 10 – World Mental Health Day • Monograph from the International Forum on Mental Illness and Suicide – Spring 2007 • WFMH-IASP JOINT SYMPOSIUM ON MENTAL ILLNESS AND SUICIDE – Coming in Spring 2007

The ultimate objective of World Mental Health Day 2006 is to raise awareness worldwide to counter the commonly held perception that mental illnesses are “secondary” health concerns that can be delayed until more immediate and pressing health care concerns have been tackled. Left undiagnosed and untreated, mental illnesses can be fatal, and they must be addressed as an issue of utmost importance
