  7. CAREER/COLLEGE EXPLORATIONCAREER CRUISING Career Cruising is a tool students have utilized to create and update their Educational Development Plan (EDP) which began in 9th grade. An EDP includes goals, college planning, high school course planning, resume writing, and many others areas which can be helpful. COLLEGE REPS • Each year, admissions counselors from colleges and universities visit Henry Ford II High School in the fall. • The schedule for these visits is located in the counseling office as well on our TV’s and in the newsletter. • These visits are held during school hours. • Students must follow the procedures, located in the counseling office, that are in place to attend a visit and are responsible to make up any missed class assignments.

COLLEGE VISITS “Visiting colleges is an excellent way to weed through the propaganda and objectively learn about the campus atmosphere, the students, the environment and location of the college that you are considering.” College Admissions Services Inc. THINGS TO SEE AND DO WHEN YOU VISIT A COLLEGE Visit the college admissions office Take a campus tour Meet with a financial aid officer Meet a professor in your field of interest Talk with current students Look into extra curricular/athletic interest or specials student services Check out various housing arrangements

  11. COLLEGE APPLICATION A majority of the colleges request that applications be submitted on-line. Go to the College/University website to apply. Fill out application and submit on line Pay application fee Request transcript through PARCHMENT Recommended that all applications be submitted by October 31st Early Action/Decision Date is November 1st Some colleges/universities have deadlines for admissions and financial aid Some are rolling admissions (no deadline) Research the school you are applying to for deadlines

  14. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION Request letters from teachers before summer so they will have it ready for you in September. Provide them a list of activities, positions held, sports, awards and community /volunteer services. Provide work experiences. Provide your plans for college and career goal. Provide name of colleges you plan to apply to.

  15. HAVE A BACKUP PLAN What if I do not get into my first choice? Apply to at least 3 colleges: Sure-thing(school you know you will get into) Middle of the Road (school that you have a good chance of getting into) Reach(your dream school...worth a try to apply) Consider transferring later

  16. 2 GREAT LOCAL PROGRAMS Macomb to Oakland M2O WAYNE-DIRECT Wayne-Direct is an early admission program for students at Wayne County Community College District, Henry Ford Community College, and Macomb Community College who are interested in transferring to Wayne State University to earn a bachelor’s degree. The Wayne-Direct program provides participating students opportunities to learn more about Wayne State University’s academic programs, to participate in campus events and activities and to utilize university academic resources. Students are encouraged to apply for Wayne-Direct early in their college career so they can fully benefit from the program and ensure a smooth transition to Wayne State. http://admissions.wayne.edu/waynedirect/ • Oakland University and Macomb Community College are welcoming students into the state’s first concurrent enrollment program. Named M2O, the program is the centerpiece of a partnership between the two higher education institutions to bring more meaningful degree-program options directly to the residents of Macomb County. • With one application, students apply to both institutions and take advantage of the resources offered by both schools. The M2O degree path is designed to help move students toward completion of their bachelor’s degree more quickly and to help ease the burden of college costs. Through M2O, students are able to first earn their associate’s degree, allowing them to more successfully secure employment in the workplace, if they so choose, while completing their bachelor’s degree. • http://www.oakland.edu/m2o
