  2. Project Area • 92 miles • 52 miles rural (48% armored) • 40 miles urban (83% armored)

  3. Characterized changes Status • New • Major Repair • Minor Repair Type of change • Shoreline armoring • Docks/overwater structures • Groins • Clearing/grading • Structures (houses/sheds/ stairs) • Aquaculture operations • Other changes Material • Wood • Rock • Concrete

  4. Location of changes in 2012 and 2013

  5. What type of changes were seen? 53% of all categories of armoring Red numbers are the % of each change found on Vashon/Maury 69% 100% 73%

  6. How many and what type had no apparent effect?

  7. Did change in condition have a City or County permit?

  8. Did change in condition have a City or County permit, continued Overall compliance rate Overall compliance rate

  9. Enforcement • Original intent was to track enforcement outcomes of unpermitted changes • Time constraints did not allow a thorough evaluation of enforcement activities

  10. Take Aways • Between 2005 and June 2013 ~1500 feet of shoreline armoring was removed via restoration projects ~1570 feet of new shoreline armoring was constructed

  11. Take Aways • Between 2005 and June 2013 More trees and shrubs are being cleared along the shoreline than are being replanted/restored or naturally re-establishing—continuing a decline noted in 2012 WRIA Status and Trends report

  12. Take Aways • Most of the changes involved repairs to existing infrastructure • Relatively low compliance rate on Vashon/Maury (18%) compared to mainland jurisdictions (52%) and2 other studies-Bainbridge (80%) & San Juan (50%) • Did not attempt to answer why people are or aren’t getting permits

  13. To get entire report—google “WRIA 9 monitoring compliance” • EPA and WRIA 9 provided funding for this project, with support from the Puget Sound Marine & Nearshore Protection and Restoration Grant Program. “This project received funding from the EPA under an agreement with WDFW.  The contents do not necessarily reflect the views and policies of the EPA.
