Assessment process Stage 1 • Assessment of application against the selection criteria: • Research • Results • Resources • Advice from Commonwealth agencies Stage 2 • Peer review of a research project proposal for each research program • Face to face interview • Generally 5 members: 3 CRC committee members and 2 independent experts

Assessment: Criteria 1 Research • Excellence and innovativeness • Relevance to industry and end-users • Education and training • Track record of researchers and competitive position of research nationally and internationally • Extension applications: Which activities are new or a continuation of previous research programs? It is important to clearly articulate what research will occur and how it will contribute to addressing the major challenge

  5. Assessment: Criteria 2 Results • Expected results • Utilisation • IP arrangements • Benefits • Scale of benefits • Timeframe The Impact Tool is important to fulfilling the results criterion

  6. Assessment: Criteria 3 Resources • Quality of leadership team • Justification for funding sought • Need for collaboration • Relevance of participants • Appropriateness of governance arrangements • Adequacy of the resources

  7. What makes a competitive application? • Understand the committee • 500 word executive summary • Response to the selection criteria • Understanding the risks of the application • Scope and scale of the CRC • Don’t assume application will progress to stage 2 • Sanity check

  8. What makes a competitive application? (2) • Innovative research • Feasibility of the research • Industry and end-user driven • Awareness of domestic and international research • The need for the CRC • Why the applicant team is the best for the job

  10. What makes a good interview? • Interview presentation • Interview participants • Chair and CEO • Mixture of end-users and researchers • Team cohesiveness
