  2. You can have more than one helping verb in a verb phrase. • Sherry will be returning home today. • Three verbs – one action • Helping verbs – will, be • Main verb – returning • He has been doing a wonderful job. • Three verbs – one action • Helping verbs – has, been • Main verb – doing

  3. A verb phrase can be separated by words that are not verbs. They can hardly wait to get to Language Arts class. • Can wait – two verbs that express one action • HARDLY is not a verb, so it is NOT part of the verb phrase Sarah and Jill can’t get credit for the project. • The verb phrase is CAN GET. • NOT is NOT a verb, and ’t means NOT.
