Context: What do we know? • Between 6-8% of the population are Lesbian, Gay or Bisexual • LGB people have: • higher rates of suicide • less likely to use health services • higher rates of drug use • These are related to negative social attitudes • Further implications for young people, BME, people who come from religious backgrounds

  3. Key Issues • Falling in between • Multiple –LGB sexual orientation and ALD • Families, carers, services • Sexual expression • Risk • Visibility • Lack of understanding of the Equality Act and Reasonable Adjustments • Access to resources, especially in coming out • Discrimination harder to challenge – fear of impact

What about the ‘T’? ‘T’ stands for transgender (people who change their gender from male to female, or who identify as being in the opposite gender) T is separate because this is about someone’s gender identity, not their sexual orientation Trans people are just as likely to identify with a sexual orientation as anyone else - heterosexual, lesbian, gay, bisexual.

IN 2012, WE MADE A FUNDING APPLICATION TO OXLEAS FOR £4, 500 TO RUN THE FIRST EVER NATIONAL CONFERENCE TO DISCUSS LBGT & ADULTS WITH A LEARNING DISABILITY. • WE THEN RECRUITED A VOLUNTEER FROM OXLEAS INTERNAL V2W SCHEME TO SUPPORT THE RUNNING/PUTTING TOGETHER THE CONFERENCE. KIRSTY ( volunteer) WAS AMAZING WORKING 3 DAYS PER WEEK • INTERESTINGLY WE SET UP A SMALL COMPETITION ASKING SERVICE USERS TO NAME WORK, BUT WE DIDN’T GET SUBMISSIONS , SO AS STAFF WE CAME UP WITH THE TITLE • HIDDEN DESIRES? • THE CONFERENCE HELD AT FRIENDS MEETING HOUSE IN LONDON IN OCTOBER 2012

  8. CONFERENCE HUGELY SUCCESSFUL WITH JUST OVER 100 DELEGATES ATTENDING FROM: • LOCAL AUTHORITY • HEALTH • THIRD SECTOR

  10. What is needed? • Link with work on sexual expression (relationships) • Opportunities to meet other LGB people • Monitoring sexual orientation • Guidance/resources/training for staff • Support for families/carers • Getting the right staff into post
