  1. What’s new about AMISR? • First incoherent scatter radar built by NSF • First U. S. incoherent scatter radar built for basic research • First phased-array, solid-state incoherent scatter radar • First incoherent scatter radar with no moving parts • First relocatable incoherent scatter radar • First reconfigurable incoherent scatter radar

  2. Arecibo Three-face AMISR Millstone Fixed Single-face AMISR Millstone Steerable Sondrestrom/EISCAT 16-panel AMISR

  3. The Advanced Modular Incoherent Scatter Radar (AMISR) Parts List Antenna Element Unit (AEU) 12288 pieces + + Solid-State Power Amplifier 12288 pieces AMISR panel 384 pieces AMISR Faces 3 pieces 384 Panel Control Boards + + = AMISR Support Structures 3 pieces

  4. AMISR Status AMISR prototype at Jicamarca, Peru. Eight panels undergoing tests and being used for scientific studies. Can detect coherent echoes from equatorial electrojet. AMISR prototype at Gakona, Alaska. Sixteen panels undergoing tests and being used for scientific studies. Can detect backscatter from heater induced irregularities and recently observed incoherent scatter returns from 400 km altitude. AMISR support structure at Poker Flat. 32 panels on route to Alaska for installation in second half of October. Interference testing with Clear AFB personnel to be conducted in November.
