Some facts of the Great Depression • Fall of the Stock Market in New York , 1929 • Banks were closed • Caused major unemployment in society • Lead to lack of manufacturing good • Trade was limited • Farmers were not producing crops • Lead to starvation • President Franklin D. Roosevelt makes some change • enforces government regulation • Creates work unions • Social security is created to help the elderly Finally ends in 1941 due to WWII and changes in society

  3. Advertising during Great Depression • Focused on hopes and wants for the people • Ignored the idea of The “depression” • False promises • Ensured wealth , and youthfulness

  4. This Dinner in a dish cost only 43cents • “six servings for 38 cents” • - this advertisement shows how affordable it could be to feed a group of people without spending much. • In Better Homes and Gardens, April 1933, back cover

  5. “Nobody can afford a cold this year • This advertisement states that a cold can be expensive promoting people to buy Vicks which is inexpensive especially for the wellbeing of the people of the depression . •  In Saturday Evening Post, Vol. 205, Jan. 7, 1933, p. 61

  6. Everyone needs money • This advertisement was done by the Daily News in 1934 during Christmas suggesting that people should not struggle because of money and should get loans

  8. Men turn to pipe smoking • This ad promotes pipes and good tobacco for the first time • They saw tobacco as a way of staying calm in waiting for prosperity •  In American Magazine, Vol. 115, June 1933, p. 87
