  1. Work Package 5 INNOVATION THROUGH INDUSTRY SLR Environmental Consulting (Ireland) Ltd

  2. OBJECTIVES WP 5 Innovation through Industry SLR • Promote interaction between the ocean observatory research community and the commercial sector • Proactively promote FixO3 and wider open ocean observatory products and services to the commercial sector • Identify innovative products & services within the ocean observatory community and develop targeted IPR agreements to encourage interest by the commercial sector

  3. The Opportunity to Deliver Products & Services Ocean Observatory Infrastructure The opportunity for ocean observatory researchers is to combine their product (data from ocean sensor infrastructure) with services (data processing, interpretation and forecasting) to deliver medium term value while engaging in pure scientific research that will drive innovation in the future

  4. PLANNED TASKS WP 5 Innovation through Industry SLR • Task 5.1 Stakeholder consultation • SLR (Lead); MI, NERC • Stakeholder consultation to assess the interest from the commercial sector and to collect contacts for future meetings/networking • Task 5.2 Meeting between open ocean observatory researchers and commercial sector • SLR (Lead); IFEMER, UiT, UPC • Meeting between open ocean observatory researchers and the commercial sector to discuss current advances in marine technology/research Task 5.3 Identify 5 innovative products and services IFREMER (Lead); UNIABDN, MI, UPC Identify 5 innovative products and services and promote these to the commercial sector. Task 5.4 Assess the Intellectual Property SLR (Lead); NERC Assess the Intellectual Property agreements in place and, if required, develop further IPR agreements Task 5.5 Develop a roadmap to commercialise prototype products SLR (Lead); UniHB For each product selected develop a project plan with tasks, timelines and associated Task 5.6 Develop partnerships with industry SLR (Lead); MI, UiT, NERC Develop partnerships with industry, connecting to buyers and sellers in different sectors. Task 5.7 Establish publication protocol for industry agreements & EC SLR (Lead); UiT Task 5.8 Reinforce links with companies that drive innovation MI (Lead); UNIABDN, NERC

  5. DELIVERABLES WP 5 Innovation through Industry SLR • D5.1 List of commercial sector contacts with interest in commercialising ocean observatory services (M10) • D5.2 List of current commercial sector needs from ocean observatory sector (M12) • D5.3 A number of technology clusters (e.g. ICT, sensors) that include industry & academic partners (M15) • NEXOS; COMMON SENSE, SenseOCEAN, SCHeMA • D5.4 An IPR agreement for the technology clusters that best fits the business needs of all parties (M20) • D5.5.1 First report on innovative products and services that identifies potential innovations (M14) • D5.5.2 Second report on innovative products and services with more detail on 5 innovations and progress on commercialisation (M26) • D5.6 Industry/Ocean Observatory Forum for development of business partnerships (M30) • D5.7 A publication protocol for industry agreement (M39) • D5.8 Final report on innovative products and services describing how they have these been promoted to the commercial sector, the interest in their use, IPR agreements in place and commercialisation agreements signed (M44)

  6. FEEDBACK WP 5 Innovation through Industry SLR Task 5.1 to assess the interest from the commercial sector and to collect contacts for future meetings/networking:

  7. FEEDBACK WP 5 Innovation through Industry SLR Task 5.1 Stakeholder Engagement: • FixO3 partners. WP2 collected all relevant technical information on hardware, software and middleware characteristics of each FixO3 site. WP12 has identified CO2 measurement, pH measurement and passive acoustic data processing as products and services to be further developed. • Oiltech Investment Network • UK IMON International Workshop on New Monitoring Technologies • NeXOSProject • COMMON SENSE Project

  8. FINDINGS WP 5 Innovation through Industry SLR • Target Market – Ocean environmental monitoring & metocean analysis • Key segments • Autonomy & sensors • Sensor technologies, biofouling & robotics • Marine Information & Computing Technologies • Market Size • £1.35bn in 2012 and growing • What is the problem in this market that we are solving? • Ocean observation technology is largely at prototype (TRL 7) stage and lacks certification appropriate for oil & gas operations

  9. Market Size & Growth The estimated turnover in the UK based marine science and technology business in 2012 is £1.35 billion, of which Oil & Gas makes up 40%, and the trend is upwards (Ref: Annual Review of UK Marine Scientific Industries 2012)

  10. Ocean Observation & the Oil Industry Oil and gas exploration companies are operating in deeper, colder water for longer periods to extract oil and gas from new deep water prospects A Simplified Supply Chain Diagram for Oil & Gas E&P

  11. FINDINGS WP 5 Innovation through Industry SLR There is a market at this time for products and services developed by FIXO3 partners with mainly US and European national research agencies, military navies, coast guard agencies and the oil industry particularly in the area of environmental monitoring

  12. Issues of Concern Innovative Products developed on Ocean Observatories applicable to Oil & Gas Deep Water Developments The problem for FIXO3 products and services in this market is that ocean observation technology is largely at prototype (TRL 7) stage and lacks certification appropriate for key market segments, such as oil & gas operations.

  13. Solutions • Offer clear value proposition • Develop Technology Clusters with Industry • Obtain accreditation (e.g. DNV) – road testing • Develop IPR Agreements • Obtain a patent and then partner with an offshore oil and gas service supply company

  14. RECOMMENDATIONS WP 5 Innovation through Industry SLR • There is a need for the public sector to give a lead by including FIXO3 supplier companies in public procurement for ocean observation services • FIXO3 supplier companies must ensure that their product and service is at the appropriate technology readiness level for deployment by industry • FIXO3 supplier companies must have a clear value proposition for their customers • FIXO3 supplier companies must concentrate their marketing efforts on Tier 3 customer companies

  15. Creating Value for Clients • Improved sustainability/ HS&E • FixO3 products will provide innovative environmental monitoring tools to determine initial baseline and long term effects of oil and gas E&P activities • Quantify anthropogenic influences of E&P activities (eg BP Angola DELOS, etc) • Our clients • Environmental consultancies • International weather forecasting and marine sensor suppliers • Do you know them? Yes, Meteo Group, Fugro, Vaisala, Ifremer, Marine Institute etc • Strategy - Partner with sensor manufacturers who have existing market access

  16. RECOMMENDATIONS WP 5 Innovation through Industry SLR Task 5.3 Identify 5 innovative products and services FIXO3 suppliers that provide products developed on ocean observatories with potential application in the offshore oil and gas and renewable energy sectors will be interviewed and their commitment to commercialisation of their products assessed. Those willing to proceed will be advised on protection of their IPR prior to identifying potential partners and routes to market.

  17. Our Products UWS a tool especially designed for wave monitoring from a moving platform such as ships in transit or an FPSO or semi-submersible drilling rig. Development of instrumented boards for the monitoring of the environment down to 6,000m Glycocoattechnology is designed to prevent biofilm formation at the very early stages by inhibiting the initial microbial binding interactions with the surface. Undersea observatory power and control systems

  18. Next Step WP 5 Innovation through Industry SLR • 7thEuroGOOS Conference Lisbon 25th October • Attendance at EO4OG (Earth Observation for Oil and Gas) Workshop London 18thNovember • Collaboration with NEXOS; COMMON SENSE, SenseOCEAN • Select volunteer companies to form cluster • 2016 Innovation Zone at Oceanology 2016
