  1. MODERN DAY MODESTY

  2. Godliness – Demonstrating the Inner Man by the Outer Man • “it is that habitual inner self-government, with its constant rein on all the passions and desires, which would hinder the temptation to these from arising, or at all events from arising in such strength as would overbear the checks and barriers which aidos (shamefastness) opposed to it” (Trench Syn. Sec.xx, end). (Vine’s) “Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ”(1 Peter 1:13)

  3. Godliness – Demonstrating the Inner Man by the Outer Man • this sound judgment and focus on spiritual matters is to have the effect of removing our attentions from this world • Conform - This word carries the idea of changing that which is outward. This passage is not merely saying not to have certain lusts but to not to participate in the outward things which would cause such lust. “As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance…”(1 Peter 1:13–16, NAS)

  4. Godliness – Demonstrating the Inner Man by the Outer Man • The force of the passage is plain to see, every aspect of our lives and action is to be holy i.e. modeled after the Divine principle of holiness, that which never participates in nor tempts others to sin • Our inward disposition toward God is demonstrated by our outward actions and appearance “but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” ”(1 Peter 1:13–16, NAS)

  5. Godliness – Demonstrating the Inner Man by the Outer Man 9 But you are a chosenrace, a royal priesthood, a holynation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. 10 for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not receivedmercy, but now you have receivedmercy. 1 Peter 2:9–11 (NAS) • Chosen in Christ • Called from darkness into light • Made a people • Received Mercy

  6. Godliness – Demonstrating the Inner Man by the Outer Man 11Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul. 1 Peter 2:9–11 (NAS) • Our inward disposition toward God is demonstrated by our outward actions and appearance

  7. Godliness – Demonstrating the Inner Man by the Outer Man “Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments, but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness. ”(1 Timothy 2:9–10, NAS) • “The well-ordering is not of dress and demeanor only, but of the inner life, uttering indeed and expressing itself in the outward conversation” (Trench, Syn., Sec.xcii).

  8. ”(1 Timothy 2:9–10, NAS) • “with shamefacedness” (KJV) - (aidos) literally “shamefastness” - “Shamefastness is that modesty which is ‘fast’ or rooted in the character (Vine’s)

  9. ”(1 Timothy 2:9–10, NAS) • “Aidos would always restrain a good man from an unworthy act” (Trench)

  10. ”(1 Timothy 2:9–10, NAS)

  11. The Real Question When is One Naked?

  12. The Real Question “Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings. …Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are you?” He said, “I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.” ”(Genesis 3:7–10, NAS) When is One Naked?

  14. The Real Question ““Because you did not serve the Lord your God with joy and a glad heart, for the abundance of all things; therefore you shall serve your enemies whom the Lord will send against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in the lack of all things; and He will put an iron yoke on your neck until He has destroyed you. ”(Deuteronomy 28:47–48) Naked = Shame

  15. The Real Question Naked = Shame ““Your nakedness will be uncovered, Your shame also will be exposed; I will take vengeance and will not spare a man.” ”(Isaiah 47:3)

  16. The Real Question ““I will also give you into the hands of your lovers, and they will tear down your shrines, demolish your high places, strip you of your clothing, take away your jewels, and will leave you naked and bare. ” (Ezekiel 16:39) Naked = Shame

  17. The Real Question “Now the man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all the living. The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them. ” (Genesis 3:20–21, NAS) When is One Clothed?

  18. When is One Clothed? • Original I.S.B.E. article on “Dress” says chiton “resembled the Roman tunic, corresponding most nearly to our long shirt, reaching below the knee always, and, in case it was designed for dress occasions, reaching almost to the ground” (I.S.B.E., II:877). . . . the chiton of the peasantry was shorter like modern kamis of Syrian fellah which is to the knee. “Now the man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all the living. The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them. ” (Genesis 3:20–21, NAS)

  19. When is One Clothed? • “The tunic . . . was a shirt which was worn next to the skin. It was made of leather, hair-cloth, wool, linen, or in modern times, usually of . . . The simplest form of it was without sleeves and reached to the knees or sometimes to the ankles. . . . Women as well as men wore it [see Cant. 5:3, A.R.V.], although there was no doubt a difference in style and pattern in what was worn by the two”(Fred H. Wight, Manners and Customs of Bible Lands, 91). “Now the man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all the living. The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them. ” (Genesis 3:20–21, NAS)

  20. The Real Question ““You shall make for them linen breeches to cover their bare flesh; they shall reach from the loins even to the thighs. “They shall be on Aaron and on his sons when they enter the tent of meeting, or when they approach the altar to minister in the holy place, so that they do not incur guilt and die. It shall be a statute forever to him and to his descendants after him. ” (Exodus 28:42–43, NAS) When is One Naked?

  21. The Real Question ““Take the millstones and grind meal. Remove your veil, strip off the skirt, Uncover the leg, cross the rivers. “Your nakedness will be uncovered, Your shame also will be exposed; I will take vengeance and will not spare a man.” ”(Isaiah 47:2–3, NAS) When is One Naked?

  22. Dressing as a Godly Person • Clothing can and often does indicate character (Prov. 7:10) • Look for the divine standard rather than the excuse • Modesty requires education and practice
