  1. About 2600 years ago, during the reign of the Roman king Tarquin … A sailing expedition left the Anatolian city of Phocaea and set off to discover new lands.

  2. The Phocaean flotilla were led by two captains : Simos and Protis. It navigated along the Mediterranean coast up to Ostia, Rome's port. It stopped there and formed an alliance with the Romans.

  3. A few Phocaean ships (rowing vessels also equipped with sails), continued their journey towards Gaul.

  4. They landed in a protected bay, near the mouth of the Rhone.

  5. The beauty of the place enchanted the Greeks. The creek was very well located and sheltered from the wind. On the northern shore, a hill would make the perfect place for a safe settlement.

  6. And a spring, the Lacydon, run into the sea, providing stock of fresh water.

  7. A tribe of Segobriges (Ligurians) lived near this creek. The king of the tribe, Nann, welcomed the Phocaean visitors and invited them to join the wedding ceremony of his daughter, princess Gyptis.

  8. The local tradition was that when a young girl reached the age of getting married, she would freely choose from among an assembly of available men.

  9. During the wedding banquet, princess Gyptis snubbed all her suitors. She turned instead toward the young Phocaean captain Protis and offered him the cup.

  10. King Nann accepted the union and gave the young couple some land, which included the Lacydon creek. It is there that "Massalia", the city of Marseille, was to be born.
