  3. What’s Our Mission? Our mission is to ensure high levels of achievement for all students as determined by state and national standards. We commit to a comprehensive system of support to assure this outcome.

  4. Goals for 2008-2009 District: • To reduce the dropout rate to less than 4.0% Academic 2. To increase percent of students meeting the standards on the school-wide writing rubric.

  5. Goals for 2008-09 • Academic • To increase the percent of students reading at or above grade level. • To increase the number of college credits earned through Advanced Placement courses and college articulation agreements.

Why we are proud • We consistently graduate a high percentage of students who attend four-year schools and students who are well-prepared for their career choices. • Our NECAP scores are consistently above state • averages despite a de-emphasis on standardized • testing. • Our reading and writing programs are on the rise.

  8. Why we are proud • We have much better supports for at-risk and disadvantaged students than we did in past years. • We have much better supports for ninth grade students.

  9. Why we are proud • Our performing arts programs have been uplifting this year. • Drum Line • Musicals (both school and community) • Band and Chorus • Dance • Multicultural Awareness

  10. Why we are proud • A variety of sports in all three seasons • Highly successful ski, ice hockey and field hockey programs • Developing programs in other areas • High student participation rates • Consistently near the top of Class I in sportsmanship

  11. Why we are proud • We have a new facility that is one of the best facilities in New Hampshire. This shows tremendous community support for education.

  12. Why we are proud • A beautiful auditorium with a stage for dance, music and theater • State-of-the-art science and career-tech labs • New gymnasium, fitness lab and athletic facilities

  13. Why we are proud • An industry standard wireless network throughout the building. • High definition televisions that can be used for closed-circuit broadcasts as well as computer monitors • A television studio

  14. Why we are proud • We have a culture and a school improvement team that continually looks at measures of student achievement and school climate. • We set goals and measure our results.

  16. Important Terms to Know Coming into High School • Transcript – Report card grades get transferred to this document. It is a PERMANENT record of ALL your grades throughout high school. • Credit – Awarded when a class is complete and a passing grade has been achieved. • Year long 55 minute classes are worth 4 credits • Semester long 55 minute classes are worth 2 credits • Core Classes – English, Math, Science, Social Studies • Electives – Art, Gym, Health, Foreign Language, Music • GPA – Grade Point Average • Graduation Requirements – The amount of credits needed in both • core and elective classes. You will find this on page 7 of the • Program of Studies.

  17. Key Points in Course Selection • There are six 55-minute classes each day. • Every ninth grade student takes English I, World Cultures, Physical Science and Math (mostly integrated math, algebra or geometry) for a full year. • These classes will be taken in the first four periods of the day.

Key Points in Course Selection • Periods 10/11 and 12/13 (after lunch) should allow for: • A high interest elective such as music, art, dance, career-tech, computers, creative writing, physical education options, health.) This fifth or sixth period class changes at the semester. • The remaining period should be world language, reading support, academic support or directed study.

  20. Key Points in Course Selection • We are responsible to ensure that students can read. If students are behind in reading, we will require contact with our Reading Specialist. • Course leveling depends on subject area: math from Day 1, science after quarter one, and English/World Cultures by year end.

  21. Key Points in Course Selection • All students who submit course selection sheets on time have the same chance of receiving their first choices. • Teams are determined largely by math courses and balancing factors. We want about the same number of students on each team.

  22. Key Points in Course Selection • Students selecting French I or German I should make an alternative selection for language. This is a budgetary issue. • Please call your middle school counselor if you have any questions. If you still have concerns, call us 356 – 4325 or look at the Guidance section of the Kennett High School website.
