Who is Jane Austen? • 16 December 1775: born in Steventon England, to George and Cassandra Austen (6 brothers and 1 sister) • 1790-1793: writes her juvenalia • 1795-1798: writes first versions of Northanger Abbey (Susan), Sense& Sensibility (Elinor & Marianne), and Pride and Prejudice (First Impressions) • 1801-1805: Father retires, moves to Bath with wife & daughters • 1803: ‘Susan’ (Northanger Abbey) bought by publisher but never actually published • 1803-1805: “Lady Susan” begun

(cont.) • 1803-1805: “The Watsons” begun • 1805: Father dies; women move from house to house • 1808: Live in Southampton with brother & Sister-in-law • 1809-1817: Lives with mother & Sister at Chawton House on brother’s estate; Revises P&P and S&S • 1811: Sense & Sensibility is published • 1813: Pride & Prejudice is published • 1814: Mansfield Park is published; begins Emma

(cont.) • 1816: Emma published & dedicated to the Prince Regent (whom she did NOT care for at all) • 1817: Begins “Sanditon” before debilitating illness • 17 July 1817: dies in Winchester, England; buried in Winchester Cathedral together by brother • 1818: Northanger Abbey and Persuasion published posthumously
