  1. WP2: DATA COLLECTION AND METADATA COMPILATION Data collection in the Greater North Sea status - progress Anders Windelin, Marc Bassompierre & Janus Larsen NERI, Denmark & Neil Holdsworth ICES, Denmark

  2. Partners: Greater North Sea Neil Holdsworth (ICES) Mark E. Charlesworth (NERC-BODC) Gilbert Maudire (IFREMER) Friedrich Nast (BSH-DOD) Francisco Hernandez (VLIZ) Helge Sagen (IMR) Serge Scory (RBINS-MUMM) Lotta Fyrberg, Philip.Axe (SMHI) Taco de Bruin (NIOZ) Content: • About the regional data pool • data and working flow • maps • CDI • Data collection • status – data collection • regional data pool • data products (DIVA maps)

  3. Boundaries:Greater North Sea About the regional data pool- for the regional data products -4/62 13/62 -4/49 13/49

  4. About the regional data pool- for the regional data products • data collection to the regional data pool in the Greater North Sea take advantage of the existing ICES database DOME • extract from DOME to the regional data pool (EMODNET Chemical Buffer Database) • => North Sea partners only have to report additional datasets (except nutrients)

  5. About the regional data pool- for the regional data products • data and working flow - EMODNET Chemical Buffer database

  6. Data collection – regional data pool Greater North SeaCBD database = Chemical buffer database = regional data pool |Chemical parameter emarks | Pesticides Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) Pesticides Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) Antifoulants Tributyltin (TBT) Antifoulants Triphenyltin (TPT) Pharmaceuticals Oxytetracycline (C22H24N2O9) Not in the CBD database at the moment Heavy metals Mercury (Hg) Heavy metals Cadmium (Cd) Heavy metals Lead (Pb) Hydrocarbons Anthracene (C14H10) Hydrocarbons Fluoranthene (C16H10) Radionuclides Tritium Not in the CBD database at the moment Radionuclides Cesium 137 Very few in the CBD database at the moment Radionuclides Plutonium 239 Not in the CBD database at the moment Nutrients Nitrate (NO3) Nutrients Phosphate (PO4) Organic matter Organic Carbon (C) Organic matter Organic Carbon (N)

  7. Data collection - status |Chemical Parameter Remarks | Antifoulants Tributyltin (TBT) ICES way OK / ODV-way =>3 out of 4 missing Antifoulants Triphenyltin (TPT) ICES way OK / ODV-way =>3 out of 4 missing Heavy metals Mercury (Hg) ICES way OK / ODV-way =>3 out of 4 missing Heavy metals Cadmium (Cd) ICES way OK / ODV-way =>3 out of 4 missing Heavy metals Lead (Pb) ICES way OK / ODV-way =>3 out of 4 missing Nutrients Nitrate (NO3) Almost okay Nutrients Phosphate (PO4) Almost okay Hopefully the selected Nutrients, Antifoulants and Heavy metals will be fully updated very soon => trying to fulfill the aim of having at least 50% of the agreed data products for the Chemical portal by the end of May 2010

  8. Data collection - data products - DIVA MAPS, Chemical Buffer Database, Greater North Sea Nitrate (NO3): 1997-2008, 0-5 meter Phosphate (PO4): 1997-2008, 0-5 meter

  9. Data collection - data products - DIVA MAPS, Chemical Buffer Database, Greater North SeaLead (Pb): 1997-2008, water column Cadmium (Cd):1997-2008, water column

  10. SDN / EDMONET ? Should they be compatible? • Parameter consideration • SPATIAL consideration • SDN / EDMONET boundaries ? • depth ? layers • TIME consideration • and the time considered ? • climatologies periods ? • monthly / seasonal / yearly /time period? • DIVA processes and products • Gridded fields of selected parameters representing climatological averages • Error maps to reflect the accuracy and the distribution of the observations
