  1. Task Force on Modelling and measurement activity : synergies with FAIRMODE Laurence Rouïl (INERIS) Co-chair of the TFMM

  2. The TFMM within the CLRTAP set up

  3. Measurement and modelling as a whole • Support the implementation of the protocols of the Convention on Long Range Transboundary Air Pollution: Gothenburg, HM, POPs • Assessment of the impact of the protocols: impact of the reduction of the emissions of air pollutants • Long term monitoring according to the EMEP monitoring strategy (NILU/CCC) • Spatialized air concentration and deposition fields in the EMEP area computed with the EMEP models : O3, PM (met.no/MSC-W) , POPs, HM (MSC-E) • Input data for TFIAM : source/receptor matrices for the RAINS/GAINS model • EMEP assessment Report ; EMEP PM assessment report (2007) • EMEP-unified model review (2004); EURODELTA 1 project

  4. Status 2006, incl intensive data Main ions in precip PM10 and/or PM2.5 TC, OC or OM 83 29 12 Heavy metals POP VOC 16 17 67

  5. Level 1 sites Level 1 sites Level2 supersites

  6. The modellingactivity • Added-value brought by the common work joining measurement and modelling communities • Yearly production of trends analyses country by country and source/receptor relationships (transboundary contributions to “national” air pollution) • Support to the development and the evaluation of the EMEP models (/www.emep.int/OpenSource/index.html ) • Exchange of experience with the modelling teams in the Parties; support for the development of modelling capacities in the Parties

  7. Currentpriorities • PM modelling : realisation of EMEP field campaigns (2006-2007 and 2008-2009) dedicated to PM speciation • Natural contributions • EC/OC • Nitrogen issues : according to the revised EMEP strategy and considering and the current initiatives • Improvement of the model accuracy (resolution?) • Urban scale : how to better account for the urban scale in regional air quality assessment : City-Delta Follow-up • Inconsistencies between emissions, measurement and modelling for some pollutants : heavy metals first • Use of the new generation of observation data : • Research monitoring networks (EUSAAR, EUCAARi, EARLINET...) • Earth Observation data

  8. June 2006- Evaluation of the EMEP-Unifed model -

  9. Example: Improvement for Payerne Meteorologisk Instituttmet.no

  10. Currentpriorities • PM modelling : realisation of EMEP field campaigns (2006-2007 and 2008-2009) dedicated to PM speciation • Natural contributions • EC/OC • Nitrogen issues : according to the revised EMEP strategy and considering and the current initiatives • Improvement of the model accuracy (resolution?) • Urban scale : how to better account for the urban scale in regional air quality assessment : City-Delta Follow-up • Inconsistencies between emissions, measurement and modelling for some pollutants : heavy metals, PM and even O3 (trends analysis) • Use of the new generation of observation data : • Research monitoring networks (EUSAAR, EUCAARi, EARLINET...) • Earth Observation data Obvious cooperation with other on-going or emerging initiatives !

  11. Identified areas for cooperation

  12. Upcoming TFMM meetings • TFMM workshop – November 2009, Ispra - back to back with the FAIRMODE plenary meeting • Identification of gaps to be filled in and future priorities for the next EMEP field campaigns • Decision on the future modelling activities of the TFMM : modelling objectives, national contribution, collaborations... • TFMM annual meeting– Spring 2010- Cyprus ; back to back with a joint day with the TFEIP annual meeting
