  2. Underdogs • People expected to lose to a challenge ("Why you should be an underdog”) • Liked because we can relate to them as people ("Why you should be an underdog”)

  3. Childhood • Born on July 17, 1918 - Has not died yet (“Nelson Mandela Biography”) • Born in Mvezo, Transkei (Located in South Africa) (Denenberg) • One of 13 children (Bobby) • Due to birth position (4th oldest and son of third wife), he was to become a royal advisor to his brothers (Bobby)

  4. Schools and Escape • Went to following schools to learn about law…(Bobby) • Clarkesbury Missionary • Healdtown • University of Fort Hare (Expelled due to protesting) • Fled to Johannesburg to avoid arranged marriage. Worked in gold mine as guard. ("Nelson Mandela hero file.“)

  5. The ANC • Nelson attempted to create own legal law firm but was denied. Created underground law firm with friend Walter Sisulu (Bobby) • Later joined African National Congress ("Nelson Mandela Biography”) • Fought against white supremacy apartheid ("Nelson Mandela Biography”)

  6. Jail time • Due to violent protesting by radical group of ANC, Nelson Mandela and other ANC figures were jailed for life. ("Nelson Mandela Biography”) • Conflicts continue top arise despite jailed ("Nelson Mandela Biography”) • Was asked to surrender many times but refused (Bobby) • Was transferred occasionally to different prisons along with other ANC figures ("Nelson Mandela Biography”)

  7. Freedom and rest of life • After 27 years in custody. Nelson Mandela is freed along with the others. Blacks are finally treated equal alongside Whites. ANC and other political equality groups are returned. ("Nelson Mandela Biography”) • Later won a Nobel Prize (Denenberg)
