  2. Why Recycle? • Environmental Stewardship • Sustainability Leadership • Extend the Life of the Landfills • Improve the Ecology • It’s The Right Thing To Do

Recycling Background • Administration and student collaboration have been the impetus for recycling. • Participation in the recycling program has been on a volunteer basis. • The campus has been recycling 17% of the waste stream. • Sustainability awareness makes the time right to expand the recycling program.

  4. Casscadia Consultants • Administration and students partnered with a recycling consulting company named Casscadia. • Casscadia audited the campus waste stream, collected and documented the following data.

  5. Campus-Wide Waste Composition Cascadia Consulting:Waste Audit Mixed Waste 27.3% Recyclable Paper 39.9% Other Compostables 7.2% Food Waste 11.0% Other Recyclables 14.6%

  7. Proposed Changes in the Recycling Program • Coordinate and centralize recycling efforts • Expand recycled paper program • Implement a cardboard recycling program

Proposed Changes:Enhance Paper Recycling • Provide recycling containers in offices, classrooms, labs, etc. • Building occupants sort recyclables • Custodial: • empties recycling containers • consolidates recyclables in building • moves containers to curb for pick up • Waste paper taken to recycler • Recycler pays for paper received

  9. Recycling Partners • Custodial collects recyclable paper • Ace hauls paper • Weyerhaeuser recycles collected paper • Office Pack - $115.00 ~ $130.00 per ton • Mixed Paper ~ $35.00 per ton

  10. Recycling In The Office • Office Pack paper will be collected in offices. • Sort, separate office pack from trash. • Place office pack in recycling container. • Custodial will collect office pack paper on a weekly schedule. • Do not contaminate recycling waste stream.

  14. Recycling In Public Areas • Mixed Paper will be collected in public areas (classrooms, labs, halls, etc.) • Sort, separate mixed paper from trash. • Place mixed paper in recycling container. • Custodial will collect mixed paper. • Do not contaminate recycling waste stream.

Proposed Changes:Enhance Cardboard Recycling • Cost effective only when compacted & bailed • Wet cardboard is not marketable • Establish a central cardboard recycling station • A shelter for compactor/bailer & dry storage • Coordinate all cardboard collection • Purchase Cardboard Bailer (August 2007) • Implementation of cardboard center (Aug 2007)

  21. Recycle Mania 2008 • January 2008 through April 2008 • A friendly competition among college and university recycling programs. • Largest amount of recyclables per capita • Largest amount of total recyclables • Least amount of trash per capita or the highest recycling rate
