  3. LFB Sustainability Strategy

  4. Early progress on emissions Frontline vehicles • Replacement and upgrades with PM abatement traps in 2008 & 2012 as part of the Low Emission Zone • CO2 & NOx improvements resulted from efficiency through vehicle replacement cycles and reductions in vehicle numbers

  5. The need for Innovation • OJEU Prior Information Notice issued & identified: • lots of technologies needing thorough review • limited resources to evaluate them • Trials were essential to demonstrate benefits & value • Innovation needed • Innovation needed

  6. European Project Funding • EC Enterprise & Industry Directorate: Public Procurement of Innovation funding call in 2011 • 2-4 year project, • Funding for 95% of project costs and procurement of innovation • Target sectors: climate change, energy and resource scarcity, health and ageing

  7. Benefits of EC funding • Addressed the issues around resources & trials • Enabled support from management to establish a project • Raised the need to address vehicle emissions up the agenda • Collaboration provided links to other organisations: • widening the scope for research, support and understanding of the wider fire markets needs • providing a more attractive offer to suppliers • Better dissemination of outcomes to benefit more FRS’ and public procurers

  8. Recent Progress on emissions • 80 EV Chargepoints installed (9 publicly accessible) • Aiming for an all EV car fleet via our 2015/16 car replacement cycle • Testing Selective Catalytic Reduction equipment to reduce NOx • Future aspirations for a low emission pumping appliance
