About Cheetahs • Cheetahs are the fastest land animal in the world • Their top speed is over 60 mph • They mainly eat gazelles, wildebeest calves, impalas and smaller hoofed animals. • Historically cheetahs were found throughout Africa and Asia from South Africa to India. They are now confined to parts of eastern, central and southwestern Africa and a small portion of Iran

  3. Behavior • Found mostly in open and partially open savannahs, cheetahs rely on tall grass for camouflage when hunting. They are diurnal animals and hunt mostly during the late morning or early evening. Only half of the chases, which last from 20-60 seconds, are successful. • Cheetahs knock their prey to the ground and kill with a suffocating bite to the neck. • While males sometimes live with a small group of brothers from the same litter, females generally raise cubs by themselves for about a year

Baby Cheetahs • The mating season lasts all year • It’s takes the 3 months until the cubs are born • Cubs are usually born in groups of 2 – 4 • Their born with smoky, long, woolly hair called a mantle • The mothers move their cubs to a new hiding place every few days • AT 5-6 weeks old the cubs follow their mother and begin eating from their kill

  5. Predators • Eagles • Hyenas • Lions • And lastly the most dangerous predator to a cheetah is • HUMANS!!!!!!

  6. Why Cheetahs are Endangered • Ecotourism - Tourism has increased sharply since the late 1970s. The presence of tourists and their vehicles, disrupt hunting and even drive cheetahs from their kills because the tourists spend their time watching them feed and taking their pictures. • Loss of Habitat - Droughts and human population increases have caused decreases in cheetah habitat and food availability.

  8. Unknown Facts about Cheetahs • When cheetahs are running, they use their tails to help them steer and turn in the direction they want to go. • Unlike other big cats, cheetahs cannot roar. However, they can purr on both inhale and exhale, like domestic cats • The name cheetah comes from an Indian word meaning "spotted one."

  9. Sad Facts • Cheetahs have been extinct in many areas • In some areas 50 to 75 percent of all cheetah cubs die before 3 months.
