  1. Biology and Math pol Robbie Butze Bio P3 Math P6 12/17/12

  2. http://www.cdc.gov/TB/default.htm • Pnemuniahttp://www.mayoclinic.com/health/pneumonia/DS00135 • Mal pic http://www.bimcbali.com/ • science.howstuffworks.com virus pic • bioweb.cs.earlham.edu cell respiration • physicalgeography.net leaf photosyhthesis

  3. Biology Topics • Disease and the Immune System • Disease Portion of Exhibion Project • Central Dogma

  4. Disease and the Immune SystemStructure of Virus • Two parts Nucleic Acid (DNA or RNA). • Covered in a Protein Coat (Protection) • Not alive • Cant grow or multiply by itself • Human cell, or animal cell to help multiply • 100 times smaller than bacteria cell

  5. Life Cycle of the Virus • Adsorption: Virus attaches to host cell • Entry: Virus Injects DNA and RNA to host • Replication: Viral genetic information replicated by cell’s machinery • Assembly: New viruses are put together • Mutation: Virus is fully developed • Release: Virus releases by breaking free of host

  6. Difference of Virus and Bacteria

  7. Overview of diseases

  8. Disease Portion of the Exhibition Project

  9. My groups design Anti-Malariabottle • Baby Bottle: Can hold anything the baby drinks • Carries medicine in the bottom container • Strap for the baby to take along • Tester by the top of the bottle to test babies condition for Malaria by testing the saliva. • Green = good Yellow= May need attention Red = need help now! • LCD screen to give further instructions to the parent • Baby wont know it is getting tested to see if It has malaria

  10. How it works

  11. Malaria • Mosquito bite can be severe • Virus, parasitic disease • High fevers, coma, twitching, muscle pain • Found today in Africa and some other parts of the country • If not treated, can be fatal • Chloroquine resistant infections are used for treatment • Mefloquine or Artesunate treatments used for Chloroquine

  12. Cellular Respiration Steps • Glycolysis – Splitting of sugar, occurs in cytoplasm • Krebs cycle – Known as Citric Acid Cycle, occurs in matrix, Pyruvic acid becomes Acetyl Colt • Electron Transport Chain – makes energy pushes hydrogens from low (matrix) to high (intermembrane) • Located in the Mitochondrian • Purpose – to provide energy in molecule form ATP

  13. Photosynthesis Steps • Take in co2 (Carbon Dioxide) and sunlight • Create Glucose, • Produce Oxygen gas • Purpose to make Carbohydrates (Sugars), and oxygen. • Occurs in Chloroplast, and Ethlatroids

  14. Relationship of Cellular Respiration and Photosynthesis

  15. Enzymes Steps • Enyme and substrate – start • Bind together • Reaction occurs • Products released • Enzyme remains the same • Important for structal support (bones) • Catalysts work because they lower the amount of energy the reaction needs

  16. Linear Function Example

  17. Quadratic Function Example

  18. Piecewise Function • f(x) = -2x² +6 -1< X < 1 • f(x) = 4 -1 < X < 1 • f(x) = -4x -1 < X < 0 • f(x) = 4x 0 < X < 1
