  2. “The purpose of the AIST Foundation University–Industry Relations Roundtable is to foster communication between our university network (professors and career services representatives) and the steel industry (human resources personnel and operations representatives). The committee objective is to increase the number of professors teaching a steel-related curriculum, and to increase the number of students interested in a career in the steel industry.”

McGill University Materials Engineering Co-op Program - History/Rationale - ● Founded in 1997. ● 10 years of successful operation of the Mining Engineering Co-op Program (founded in the 1980’s) at McGill University inspired the creation of the sister co-op program in Materials Engineering. ● Rationale: To produce better future engineers by offering experiential learning to students as part of their B.Eng. degrees. ●Co-op program term: 4 month x 3 times (from 2nd year after learning basic core courses) ● Part of Core courses for UG: report and presentation ● Internal and External Evaluation

Most senior students work from May-December and return to campus for their graduating semester in January. • Course Background: Structure of Materials, Introduction to Extractive Metallurgy, Mineral Processing, Thermodynamics, Heat, Mass and Fluid Flow, Phase Transformation in Materials (Solidification, Heat Treatment, Phase Diagrams), Extractive Metallurgy, Modeling and Automatic Control, Modeling and Control:  Mineral Processing, Hydrometallurgy, Steelmaking and Steel Processing (Alloy Design, Heat Treatment, Shaping), Mechanical Properties of Materials (Strength, Deformation), Ceramics (Processing-Microstructure-Property Relationship), Electronic Properties of Materials, Polymer Engineering, Analytical and Characterization Techniques (AA, ICP, X-Ray, E-Beam), Advanced Process Design, Various technical electives specific to extractive metallurgy, materials engineering, corrosion and fabrication. • Approximate number of students available:30-40 • When to post:  First-come, first-served, no ranking system. What Does the University Co-op/Internship Program Require from Industry? -To provide challenging, applied engineering tasks/projects in alignment with CEAB graduate attributes to students for the duration of their co-op internships. -To offer relevant, paid, hands-on learning opportunities in support of the experiential learning / co-op program’s objectives. -To offer daily or weekly supervision and mentorship to the students and to formally evaluate them twice per term. -To allow the students to write technical (or experiential) reports and submit the assignments to the university following the co-op internships. (either open report or confidential report)
