  3. A second attempt – Jamestown Colony Built in a pennisula swamp in 1607 by the London-based Virginia Company. 500 colonists of all types settled there; only 61 survived the first three years. Smith’s Solution? 1609 “He that shall not work shall not eat” (II Thess. 3:10) “If you don’t plant crops, you won’t eat in the winter” + trade with natives + build defenses + make maps of the countryside + write stories to encourage immigration + get captured by the bloodthirsty Powhatan tribe

Smith: "at the minute of my execution, she hazarded [i.e. risked] the beating out of her own brains to save mine; and not only that, but so prevailed with her father, that I was safely conducted to Jamestown“ Pocahontas: “ “ Historians: He’s a liar OR He misremembered OR Powhatan was just messing with his head OR It really happened that way OR He was confusing events OR something else.

  8. Regardless… Pocahontas became a valuable ally for the Jamestown colonists. She was later kidnapped, married John Rolfe, travelled to England as a Native American princess, and died there of smallpox in 1617 at the age of 22. Conflict continued between the settlers and the Powhatan tribe. Smith went on to more adventures, and the colony survived with new leadership.
