  1. WEEK 5PROVIDING EXAMPLES

  2. Sometimes it is difficult to understand what someone has said. However, it becomes clear when he/she gives examples. İbrahim is acooperativestudent. Do you know what “cooperative” means? Let me give an example to explain “cooperative; For example, he works well with people because he likes to be part of a team and share his ideas with others. This week, you will write a short composition, and it will have a main idea. You will give three examples to explain and support your main idea.

  3. FOR EXAMPLE; 1) My mother is very forgetful. WE HAVE LOTS OF EXPERIENCES ABOUT HER FORGETFULNESS When we were staying in a hotel, she forgot the key. When my parents were going to Hawaii, she forgot her purse at home. When she went shopping, she left a bag in a store. 2)Why do the people go abroad? THEY HAVE LOTS OF PURPOSES For example, they want to see historical and famous places For example, they want to improve a foreign language. For example, they have connections because of their work.

  4. BEFORE YOU START; BRAINSTORMING Brainstorm about the examples which explain and support your topic. Choose three of them.

  5. Examples of activities that can be done in Istanbul See historical places Go to concert Taste different food Have a Bosporus tour shopping

  6. SO IT’S TIME TO START WRITING A SHORT COMPOSITION ABOUT COMPUTER USERS.

  7. HOOK INTRODUCTION Is the opening sentence of introduction. is the interesting start GENERAL, NOT SPECIFIC! FOR EXAMPLE; There are many cities that you should see before you die.

  8. INTRODUCTION BACKGROUND INFORMATION • More specific than the HOOK. • At least two sentences • Gives background information about the topic. • should be related to one another, to the hook, and to the thesis statement. • FOR EXAMPLE; One of these cities is İstanbul. It’s of the biggest and the most famous city in Turkey. It is located in north-west Turkey. Thousand of tourists visit İstanbul every year to do different kinds of things.

  9. THESIS STATEMENT INTRODUCTION • INCLUDES, • Topic/Main Idea • Three examples/instances. FOR EXAMPLE, There might be numerous activities that you can do in İstanbul, yet having a Bosporus Tour, Shopping, and visiting historical places are the most famous examples of these activities.

  10. BODY • FIRST EXMAPLE • Signaling(Transition) Word + Topic sentence + Details • SECOND EXAMPLE • Signaling(Transition) Word + Topic sentence + Details • THIRD EXAMPLE • Signaling(Transition) Word + Topic sentence + Details

  11. Signaling(Transition) Words: One example/instance of ...is …(NOUN). Another/Second example/instance of … is …(NOUN). To give another example/instance,..(S+V) A well-known example of … is … The last/third example/instance is …(NOUN) To give one last example/instance, ...(S+V)

  12. You can also use these transitions while you giving examples, yet you should be careful. • One more example took place a few years ago. • I have lots of things to do such as ironing, doing my homework, and reading book. • ElifShafak is the writer of the well-known books such as The Forty Rules of Love, The Bastard of Istanbul, The Flea Palace, and Black Milk. • Another example happened six years ago. • Still one more example of dangerous pet is the pit bull. • Another instance of Ayşe’s forgetfulness took place last year. • The most dramatic example of culture shock happened when I went shopping.

  13. HERE IS MY BODY PARAGRAPH!!!!!!!  One example of activities that you can do in İstanbul is having a Bosporus Tour. Istanbul is a semi-island that has lands in Asia and Europe. At the same time, it is surrounded by Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara. The Bosphorus(Boğaziçi) Strait divides the province in two parts: the European side and the Asian side. You can take ferry tours from Kadıkoy or Uskudar and Eminönü. This tour enables you to see wonderful parts of Istanbul from the sea. You can take great photos and have a chance to have a look at the both parts of the city in a short period of time. Another example is shopping. The city has biggest shopping malls of Turkey. There are almost one hundred malls. Since the city has a great population, the international companies know that Istanbul ıs a profitable market. That’s why, most of the international companies like H&M, Bershka, and Zara have branches in Istanbul. At the same time, it’s very cheap as there are many alternatives. You can also find traditional things like carpet and spices thanks to KapaliCarsi and Spice Bazaar. The last example is visiting historical places.Istanbul is one of the oldest cities of the world. It was the capital of Ottoman Empire. Before the Ottoman Empire, Byzantine and Roman Empires were reigning the city. Therefore, the city has plenty of historical places. Topkapı Palace is one of the most famous of these places. The Emperors were living in this place, and you can see the culture of the Empire there. There are also many mosques whish are crucial for Ottoman architecture. Not only mosques but also churhes can be seen.In addition, you should also see Galata Tower, Maiden’s Tower, and Bacisilica Cistern.

  14. CONCLUSION • Signaling(transition) word • In conclusion,… • In Summary,… • To summarize,… • To sum up, • To conclude,… • In short,… • In brief,… • All in all,… • Summing this whole thing up,… • RESTATEMENT • SUMMARY • CLOSURE

  15. FOR EXAMPLE, Summing this whole thing up, you can do different things if you visit Istanbul. It can be an unforgettable experience for you if you are interested in history. On the other hand, you can find unique pieces to buy. You can enjoy the scenery. I feel myself lucky to have seen this magnificent city before, and I hardly recommend you to visit it.
