  8. Barbed Wire & Artillery • Barbed wire slowed infantry advances • Artillery & machine guns, made crossing open ground extremely lethal

  9. Poison Gas • 1915- both sides were using poison gas. • Won’t win battle with gas, but it made life even more miserable in the trenches • Tear gas, mustard gas, phosgene • Gas masks came at the end of the war 

  10. Tanks • Tanks were introduced in World War I by the British and created mechanized warfare that dominated the rest of the 20th century.

  11. Aircraft • Fixed-wing aircraft were first used militarily during the First World War. • Initially used for recon missions • Developed into ground-attack and fighter duties • Strategic bombing aircraft were created by the Germans and British.
