FOCI OF THE ODPD • Build and enhance human resource capacity in MCH epidemiology • Build and enhance data systems at the national, state, and local levels • Enhance the data capacity within MCHB • Collect and analyze data related to the three MCHB strategic plan goals and MCHB program areas • Coordinates MCHB’s work on program accountability and evaluation, and policy analysis

  5. BUILD AND ENHANCE HUMAN RESOURCE CAPACITY IN MCH EPIDEMIOLOGY

PROGRAMS IN MCH EPIDEMIOLOGY • Annual series of 4-6 web-based MCH DataSpeaks providing skills building • Support MCH epidemiology doctoral students who use state or local data for their dissertation • Support CDC/HRSA program on state-based MCH epidemiologists • Co-sponsor the MCH Epidemiology conf. • With CDC, sponsor training opportunities through AMCHP at the MCH Epidemiology Conference

PROGRAMS IN MCH EPIDEMIOLOGY • Graduate student intern program in Epidemiology Data Skills • Support the MCH Epidemiology Certificate Program at Emory University (with CDC) • Provide support to States who want to publish their work in scientific journals –strengthening the evidence base in MCH (with CDC) • MCH Epi Training Course for States and local areas (with CDC)

  10. NATIONAL SURVEY ON CHILD HEALTH • HRSA/MCHB Partnership with CDC/NCHS • Identifies 2000 children per state by random digit dialing telephone survey • Gathers information on the physical, mental, and emotional health of children • Survey collection January 2003-May 2004

NATIONAL SURVEY OF CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL HEALTH CARE NEEDS • HRSA/MCHB Partnership with CDC/NCHS • Identifies 750-1000 children per state by random digit dialing telephone survey • Gathers information on the health care experiences and needs of CSHCN and their families • Survey collection begins January 2005

HEALTH BEHAVIORS OF SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN SURVEY • Quadrennial survey of 15,000 US children in 6th--10th grades • Information compared to 30 other countries conducting the same survey • Co-sponsored by NICHD and HRSA/DCAFH • Next survey to begin in 2005 • Goal is to provide background information on adolescent health behavior in support of MCHB programs

OTHER PROGRAMS IN BUILDING DATA CAPACITY • Integrating States’ child health information systems with newborn screening services (with DCSHCN) • Using multi-level modeling to design programs to address disparities in State and local areas • Support data capacity-building for state and community child review teams with DCAFH (Division of Child, Adolescent and Family Health)

DATA ANALYSIS ACTIVITIES • Co-leadership (with CDC) on the chapter for maternal and child health for Healthy People 2010 • Produce “Child Health USA” • Produce “Women’s Health USA” (with OWH and DPSHS) • Produce “Chartbook on Adolescent Health” • Produce “Chartbook on Children with Special Health Care Needs” (with DCSHCN) • Produce chartbooks on children’s health, oral health and obesity • Publications in scientific journals

  21. PLANNING, POLICY, AND EVALUATION ACTIVITIES • Work on HRSA and MCHB strategic plans • Work on Govt. Performance and Results Act plans • Work on MCHB participation in SCHIP • Chairs MCHB’s evaluation committee • Coordinates evaluation training • Provides assistance to MCHB programs on evaluation development and managed care issues

  22. TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE • Provide technical assistance on data and analysis on an as-needed basis to regional, state, local and territorial health offices, when requested
