  2. Plot • The plot is what happens in a story.

  3. Characters • Characters are the people who experience the events of a story. Brady, Rose, Karana, Satchel, Iron Men

  4. Cause and effect • The cause is why an event happens and the effect is what happens. • - Ben lives because Brady continued his search. • - Karana was in danger so she built a fence around her shelter. • - The clouds poured rain because of Rose’s touching song. • - Because he pitched so well, Satchel Paige played Pro Baseball for many years. • Because of teamwork and organization, the railroad team shredded the previous record of 7 miles built in a day. • - People that confront challenges achieve amazing things.

  5. Setting • The setting is where and when the story takes place.

  6. Theme • Theme is the “big idea” that holds the entire story together. All of our stories in this UNIT follow the same theme. What is the common theme in all 5 of Unit 1 selections?

  7. Sequence • Sequence refers to the order in which the events happen. In nonfiction, it means the steps in a process. • -Can you put the events from a story into a chronological (putting events in the order in which they happen) sequence? • -Pick a story from Unit 1 and put 5 events from that story in chronological order. Recreate an abridged version of the story in a mini-book using only your 5 events.
