  2. Exponential Functions According to legend, the inventor of the game of chess requested payment as follows: My request is a modest one. I humbly request one grain of rice on the first square on the chess board, two grains on the second square, four grains on the third square, and so on. Each square represents twice as may grains as the previous one. The king agreed to the request immediately, without doing any calculations. Do you think this was wise?

Exponential Growth When a real-life quantity increases by a fixed percent each year the amount (y) of the quantity after t years can be modeled by: Don’t confuse percent increase with growth factor! A percent increase of 200% actually means the quantity tripled! 1 + 2 = 3 (1+r) is the growth factor, r is the percent increase
